It all started with a few potatoes disappearing from the mudroom. But I thought maybe my mom had made herself some lunch with them.

Then there were the tulip bulbs strewn across the floor. But the bag as on the floor so I figured it was the dog looking for trouble.

When there was trash strewn behind the washing machine, I knew we had something more worrisome on our hands.

We were standing in the kitchen tonight and heard our not so little friend scamper across the ceiling. He seems to have taken up roost between the walls and he’s been coming out at night to feast. I never would have imagined a rat would eat tulip bulbs but I guess it’s better than nothing. I was still clinging to the hope that it was a mouse, but he has quite a voracious appetite for a little rodent. And from the sound of it moving across the ceiling, it’s bigger than a mouse.

So now we have to put out some traps and/or poison. But at least we have a place we can put it without risking the dog getting to it. Ah, the joys of living on a farm. ๐Ÿ™‚

NOTE: January 23, 2009: Stefan’s parents think it could be a marten that has taken up roost. And apparently they are even harder to get rid thasn rats…soooo, I guess we have our work cut out for us. Martens don’t like loud noises though so perhaps a radio out there would scare him off. Couple that with rat traps (loaded with potatoes of course) nd we will hopefully be well on our way to getting rid of this thing.

To be honest, I think this thing has been with us for a few months. I’ve heard creatures while working in my office that couldn’t have been ours but I was in denial. Plus it sounded like it was the size of a cat which had me concerned. I’m not used to having these weasel things to worry with as well as the other normal rodents. But we’ll soon see what comes crawling ut of the woodwork drywall. ๐Ÿ˜‰
