10 Natural Remedies We Use Often
You may not know this because I haven’t talked about it much lately, but I am a big fan of aromatherapy and essential oils. I guess you could say that I have a strong belief in many alternative ways of medicine. I’ve sort of always had an interest in the power of essential oils and after giving birth using only self-induced hypnotherapy, I’ve come to appreciate a lot more of the less... read more

Woof Wednesday: No more fleas and ticks
Hi friends! Because we had a pretty mild end to our winter, and there was no freeze to kill off hatching bugs, the creatures are out in full effect. Ticks, mosquitoes and maybe even some fleas are running rampant around here. And I think mom and dad might actually be getting tired of pulling ticks off of me or finding fully inflated ones lying on the floor. It’s time to take action to keep these... read more

E. coli and growing your own
The last few weeks of shopping here in Germany have been interesting. You’ve likely heard by now that in Germany there has been anĀ Escherichia coli (my favorite bacteria, BTW, because of the amusing name) outbreak and for about two weeks now, no one has had a single clue about where the source of the outbreak started. First cucumbers, salads and tomatoes from Spain were blamed — but no proof... read more

Natural diaper rash treatment
I first learned about this fantastic diaper rash treatment from Jentry which I had the pleasure of meeting in person at the last year’s WEBMU in Hamburg. As mothers do, we were sitting at lunch after taking an amazing walking tour of the city and our conversation turned to potty talk. All the non-parents managed to tune out quickly and as I was talking about Mackenzie’s extremely sensitive... read more

Homemade Baby Wipes
When you’ve got a little one at home in diapers, you seem to go through an unlimited supply of baby wipes every week. I know there are some people out there that make their own baby wipes with old towels, rags or socks…and I’m sure you could use those with this solution as well. But to be honest, I don’t really want a pile of these rags laying around, covered in poop. Which is why I... read more

Natural stress relief using essential oils
Stefan and I have both had a lot on our plates for the last few months…and especially the last few weeks. We were both spending long hours on huge projects for work (for those who don’t know, I’m not just satisfied to write this blog and take care of Mack, the house, the dog, the cats and such…I have a few other projects on the side .) We were plodding along, trying to get all of... read more

Using thieves oil to treat black mold
IĀ was recently contacted by a reader who has had terrible problems with black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum). If you’ve never heard about this problem, let me tell you that it is BAD stuff. Not only does it smell gross, but it is actually toxic, and it will cause you, your family and even your pets to get exceptionally sick if you don’t deal with the problem. Thankfully, there are a few ways... read more

How safe is your home from bed bugs?
A few days ago, as I was browsing through recent tweets from friends, I came across one that really got me freaked out and itching all over. A woman I know (who happens to be expecting) was rather stressed out because she’s going to have to move from her home for at least several weeks due to a bed bug epidemic. One of her former neighbors was apparently not much of a housekeeper and was actually... read more

Heal and soothe bumps and bruises naturally
I mentioned the other day that I actually used an aromatherapy method to help soothe my aching bones and nerves during my first few days home from the hospital after The Accident. I was taking 400mg tablets of ibuprofen plus another similar drug at the time…and really living from pill to pill. I hate that feeling and tend to stay away from medications of all kinds unless they are absolutely... read more

Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child
It’s probably no surprise to you that I am a big fan of essential oils and aromatherapy. I have seen first hand how powerful their effects can be…and if I can accomplish something without drugs and chemicals, I’m definitely going to give it a try. I even used essential oils with hot and cold compresses on my broken ribs when I came home from the hospital — which actually gave me... read more
