Lions, no tigers and bears — Fun at the Frankfurt Zoo
This weekend, we decided to take a little family outing. The weather is quickly progressing towards fall here and it was a bit chilly out, plus it’s been raining off and on for about a week now. But thankfully we managed to make it through the entire Frankfurt Zoo without any real storms. Mackenzie was pretty certain that this bear was a dog…or at least a close relative of Ayla. Personally, I... read more

Lantern Fest Fun Part 2: Kings, Queens and Alcohol
Alright, I intended to post these yesterday…but well, there just wasn’t time. So you get them as a dose of Friday fun instead! These were all shot during the Saturday night parade here in our village. It’s always a great time and there was a really nice turnout this year. Way more teens than ever before. And since I brought the big zoom lens, I was able to get a whole new dimension of... read more

Lantern Fest Fun Part 1: Bands and Friends
This year our Lantern Fest celebration was a bit more subdued than in other years. We didn’t have as many people visiting and we just weren’t as excited as usual about the festivities leading up to the weekend…but we did still manage to have a lot of fun. And it’s nice to take it more slowly during celebrations than feeling rushed and crazy the whole time. We recently got ourselves... read more

Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits — Yummy Breakfast Sandwiches
If you read my post on Friday about homemade biscuits, it will come as no surprise to you that I’m a fan of McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits for breakfast. I can’t actually say when the last time I ate one was (been months since I even ate at a McDonald’s) but I have never forgotten how much I enjoy them. We’re not really big on fast food here — mostly... read more

Giraffes and Monkeys and Guanakos? A trip to the Opel Zoo
Opel Zoo (website: www.opel-zoo.de, Königsteiner Straße 35, 61476 Kronberg, Tel. 06173/ 325903-0) is one of two zoos in here the Frankfurt area. The other, Frankfurt Zoo, is located in downtown Frankfurt and is your more traditional sort of zoo with seals, snake rooms, monkeys, zebras, concrete buildings and so on. But the Opel Zoo has a bit more of a “down home” feel to it with quite a... read more

Woof Wednesday: Where’s spring gone?
Hello world! Since I didn’t really know what to write about today (it’s been a quiet week), mom said maybe I could just share some photos of spring. I think she hopes it will serve as a reminder to the current weather that it is actually almost June and temps above 60°F really would be appreciated. I canine-ally find the weather pretty darn nice. Lots of drizzle to wet down my fur, an... read more

An afternoon in Alsace, France
One of the perks of living in Europe (and especially Germany) is that traveling to another country is often very quick and painless. Some friends of ours, Daniel and Henny, live in Karlsruhe (about 1.5 hours from us) which is only about 20 minutes from Alsace. The last time they came to visit us, they told us all about a great little French restaurant they know of and we made sure to set a date to visit... read more

Do they not like their jobs?
I had the “pleasure” of visiting the US Embassy in Frankfurt this morning. Lucky for us it’s only about 20 minutes drive when there’s no traffic but since I had to be there at 7:15am, it was an unusually early up-and-out-of-the-house morning for me. As if fate would have it that way, Stefan’s parents were here this weekend which is when I realized it was time to renew my... read more

Will it fit in a Smart ForTwo?
Stefan has been thinking about getting a new car for commuting. You may remember that he bought a motorcycle a few years ago to cut back on parking fees and gas costs. But when you have to wear a suit everyday, it’s not really practical…and the weather here in Frankfurt tends to be on the gray, rainy side of the scale which really isn’t that pleasant to drive in. And of course... read more

Wild garlic pesto
Wild garlic (Allium ursinum AKA bear’s garlic, ramsons or Bärlauch in German) is a wonderful chive cousin that we’re lucky to have growing in our courtyard and a bit in our garden too. At Mackenzie’s christening dinner, we were served a wild garlic soup that was just incredible. I vowed after that to never let our Bärlauch go unharvested again. Last year, I still missed it because I... read more
