You’re so pretty

The name of the game for You Capture this week is “pretty.” And while I’d generally take shots of Mack and nature around us, I thought it would be nice to showcase some of the pretty stuff we saw at Hessenpark this past weekend. Hessenpark is a really awesome living museum dedicated to the  homes and way of life of the past. Not only do you get to look at lots of old homes and buildings... read more

Women Expats Confess

Have you decided to take the leap of moving to a foreign country and joining the ranks of expats around the world? Do you just like to think about what it might be like to live somewhere overseas? Did you just move to a faraway land and now have no idea what to do with yourself there? Have no fear: the new book, Expat Women: Confessions – 50 Answers to Your Real-Life Questions about Living Abroad is... read more

Hanau’s Soap Box Derby

By chance, we found out that this past weekend, not too far from our home, Germany’s largest soap box derby (Seifenkistenrennen) was taking place. The Hanauer Seifenkistenrennen has apparently been going on for many, MANY years (at least since Stefan was a kid) and there were said to be over 300 competitors. To be honest, these were some wildly advanced soap box cars and I was really pretty impressed... read more

10 Reasons I Have Been Slacking

I have been making an effort to post more quality over quantity posts the last few weeks. And you probably noticed that last week I neglected to post anything at all. That was mostly because we had some friends visiting from out of town. But we weren’t really doing anything special on those days so I still could have blogged — but I was just lacking inspiration. And at the moment I have a bunch... read more

Shopping local taking hold of Germany

It may not come as a huge surprise to you that a lot of people in Germany shop at weekly farmer’s markets for their foods. But what you may not have realized is that not all of the food you are buying at these markets (whether they are open air or more permanent like the market we have in town) is not actually from producers in your area. Much like in America, Germans have slowly become more... read more

The German Spargel Obsession

Spargel season is slowly beginning here in Germany, which generally goes hand-in-hand with strawberry season. At the moment, a lot of what is available is still from France (especially the strawberries) but the first devilishly expensive German strawberries are also hitting the markets and it will be no time at all before there are Spargel stands on every corner. Spargel, also known as asparagus, is a... read more

Flour in Germany: Not as easy as it seems

In America, it was quite easy. You went into the grocery story, you picked up a bag of flour, you took it home and you did whatever you wanted with it. It was the flour called for in every recipe known to man: all-purpose flour. And it would make sense that this multipurpose, good for everything flour is readily available. So you move to Germany and you go shopping and you find Weizenmehl and you think... read more

My easy Easter decor

Don’t forget: Today is the last day to enter the Made in Germany giveaway where over $1100 in prizes are up for grabs! Three winners will be chosen in the US and Europe! Low entries so far — especially in Europe I almost didn’t decorate for Easter this year. Partially because we’re going to be spending the holiday with Stefan’s parents in Bavaria…and partially because... read more

Germans and the Handshakes, Kisses & Hugs Debate

Although it seems like it’s been a million years ago, when I first came to visit Germany with Stefan 11 years ago (before we even knew we’d ever be living over here) he gave me a little heads up about Germans and the way they greet each other. When you first meet someone, a handshake is a standard greeting. Unless you’re in a big group and they’re pretty young — and then... read more

Today the plates came out

It’s an exciting day here. The sun is shining, it’s already close to 60 degrees and it’s shaping up to be an absolutely beautiful day. There are about a thousand projects I would love to be outside doing today, namely digging up weeds in the garden. But that’s just going to have to wait a little bit longer. Today, the final step in putting our accident behind us, has been completed.... read more
