More canning jars for the collection
“Did you know they’re giving away 1 & 2 liter canning jars at your farmer’s market right now?” “Uh no,” we responded to Stefan’s father as we sat enjoying dinner last night. “Yeah, they had a sign up when I was up there earlier and I forgot to mention it.” So once again we have lucked into free canning jars. We ended up with about fifty 1.5 and 2... read more

Decorating with your bush & shrub trimmings
Spring has sprung in Germany and the weather this week has simply been GLORIOUS! We’ve had highs in the 60′s and 70′s…and this weekend it’s supposed to be up to 80F. Hard to imagine that spring is truly here after our -18C winter – but hopefully this lovely start to spring is just a taste of what is to come. We deserve it! The trees, bushes and shrubs are in full bloom... read more

Looks a bit American…
So my MIL & FIL were standing outside our house the other day and an older lady was walking by. She stopped to chat and mentioned that the decorations on the house looked really nice, “although they are a bit American. Not that that is a bad thing.” We got a good laugh from that comment and I guess I have to agree; but I don’t take any offense. American’s still usually make an... read more

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
My mom and I went to find some pre-Christmas decorating bargains at the local home improvement store yesterday which already has all their holiday stuff marked down 50%. We don’t have too many Christmas-sy things around our house since those sorts of things are expensive to collect together (which is why it’s usually done over many years) and we’ve never really had the space or interest... read more

Trimming the tree
We went out Sunday to Hirzbacher Höfe in a little town called Hammersbach. It is one of the few places around here that seems to cut their own trees from their own lot. You can even go into the forest and cut a tree fresh if you don’t like anything in their pre-cut lot. The prices were extremely reasonable too…especially considering what we paid last year. Our tree then was on par with this... read more

Getting festive
We went to get our Christmas tree yesterday…and Stefan has been putting up lights and building yard decorations over the last couple of weekends. We were hoping that some more of our neighbors would find their holiday spirit…but so far they seem to be trying to conserve energy or something. Kinda pathetic really. Or maybe they figure we have enough Christmas spirit for the whole... read more

Finishing up stuff in the kitchen
While Stefan’s parents were here, his dad and he worked on several projects around the house that were not too labor intensive but still really needed to be done. One of those tasks was laying network cable through most of the main house. Yes, we have wireless here also…but it’s just not all that reliable unless it’s on a laptop. They were actually finishing up that task last Friday... read more

So she’ll sleep like a baby…
We’ve only got a few weeks left until Mackenzie arrives so putting her furniture together finally seemed like the right thing to do. Stefan did assure me that Warren Buffet let his kids sleep in a drawer of his dresser until they outgrew it and I assume they turned out fine. I am certain we would have found some place for her to park her little butt, even if the cats didn’t approve right off... read more

Got any grapevines hanging around?
The sun is shining here today, for the first time in what feels like weeks. And although it’s supposed to be only in the mid-50′s the next few days, I definitely prefer cool days with sunshine than grey, miserable, rainy days like those that usually fill the winters here in Frankfurt. So I took advantage of a bit of the sunshine this morning, doing some sweeping and cleaning up in our... read more

The bedroom overhaul
We had a lot of work ahead of us this weekend. Thankfully we are IKEA building pros so the stack of boxes laying in Mackenzie’s future room wasn’t all that daunting…but actually figuring out how we planned to arrange all the new closets with our current furniture was making us scratch our heads a bit. Below are a few before photos of our bedroom. Please try to ignore the dirty room... read more
