Entertaining the kids on Turkey Day
You do not want the children at your Thanksgiving feast turning out like the devil children that graced our table last year…so it’s always wise to have a few things to keep kids occupied on Turkey Day. A lot will depend on the ages of the kids attending…but with any luck you’ll have various ages who will help each other stay amused. Don’t forget to also invite kids to help out... read more

Thanksgiving: Just Desserts
Usually the only dessert that matters to me on Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie. I will make about 6 of them, share 1-2 with family and friends on Turkey day and then hoard the rest until I eat them all. Ok, now I do actually share them with my husband…and I guess I will also let Mackenzie in on that eventually – but at some point, more pies will just have to be added to make up for more people... read more

Rolls that melt in your mouth…like buttah
I find that there are few things in life better than a good dinner roll. When I came across a sweet dinner rolls recipe last Thanksgiving, I was a little skeptical despite all the great reviews. But after making them myself, I know what all the fuss is about. One of the great things about these rolls is that you can start the dough in your bread machine (if you have one that is) and then only need to let... read more

5 Simple Thanksgiving Side Dishes
You’ve got a lot of stuff ahead of you on Thanksgiving day…and going crazy making lots of side dishes shouldn’t be one of the things you need to worry with. I selected fairly simple sides for my first Thanksgiving dinner and most of them also happen to be very traditional ones at our house. We don’t usually have recipes for them but they’re so simple that you really... read more

Thanksgiving: Dressing and cranberry/currant relish
Thanksgiving shortcuts are hard to pull off here in Germany. So when I go on about making my own dressing from scratch and you just want to hurl, remember that I can’t get things like Stove Top Dressing Mix here in Germany. If I could, I might very well use it. Or I could use a copycat recipe for Stovetop. But I also find this dressing recipe a great way to use up old baguettes and rolls that... read more

Best turkey brine ever
Last year, I tried something new: brining a turkey. It’s a simple process, where you let the bird soak for 24-48 hours in a bath of spices. It will leave your turkey so moist and tender, it may end up completely falling off the bone when you go to carve it. The breasts literally just lifted off the bird in complete pieces. We had a 15 pound turkey so putting it in a pot was not really an option;... read more

The Thanksgiving Countdown
Thanksgiving will be combined with Christmas at our house this year. I would have loved to do a traditional dinner with all the trimmings, but I could be in the hospital, have just brought Mack home or still be pregnant – so planning a huge feast at our place with friends just didn’t seem so practical. But next year, we will make up for it! Even though I won’t be cooking, I wanted to... read more

Thanksgiving Turkey Like Mom Makes It
There is little doubt that one of the most important parts of a Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey…at least in most households. And I always have to think of Christmas Vacation and the delicious turkey they have there when it comes to carving it up. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and eaten in the U.S. at Thanksgiving—that’s one sixth... read more

A Thanksgiving to remember
This blog has been massively neglected lately and I actually started this post shortly after Thanksgiving…but it required more attention so I just let it go. Terrible I know!! We were building out part of our farm and everything else just fell through the cracks…but we’re still here and looking forward to overloading ourselves with gardening stuff very soon lol. This year, we hosted our... read more
