Top Ten Ground Beef Recipes
So I’ve been trying to get myself a bit more organized in the kitchen lately and although I still have a lot of ground to cover, I thought it would useful to start putting together a few lists of my favorite recipes that we eat all the time. You can never really have too many good recipes, right? And if you do any sort of meal planning, it’s really important to not only add new recipes from... read more

Blueberry Zucchini Bread
As you may recall, we are huge fans of zucchini bread in this house and I make a couple loaves almost every week. Now that Stefan is back at work and I want him to have something in his belly every morning, I’m back to baking. But I was feeling a bit bored with the usual zucchini bread and had a bunch of blueberries in the fridge to use up…and so this recipe was born. I basically just took my... read more

Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits — Yummy Breakfast Sandwiches
If you read my post on Friday about homemade biscuits, it will come as no surprise to you that I’m a fan of McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits for breakfast. I can’t actually say when the last time I ate one was (been months since I even ate at a McDonald’s) but I have never forgotten how much I enjoy them. We’re not really big on fast food here — mostly... read more

Sour Cream Buttermilk Biscuits — Moistest biscuits ever
I love biscuits. I make them with chicken & gravy, I eat them for breakfast with jam or honey…and sometimes I just eat them as they are. I can remember many a Sunday morning when I was little, when my family would get up and make biscuits for breakfast. They were heavenly. But most biscuits generally err toward the dry side of life and unfortunately that just doesn’t interest Stefan. I say... read more

Beer Poached Salmon in the Römertopf
Since the day my new Romertopfs arrived in the mail last week. I have been wondering what I should cook in it. I found a few nice salmon filets in our trunk freezer that definitely needed to be used, so I decided to throw in whatever ingredients I had at home (which wasn’t much) to make a tasty Romertopf dish. Thankfully I had a few other recipes to guide me on times and so on, but I think that... read more

How to make vanilla extract
One thing I use a lot of in this house is vanilla. Since I bake zucchini bread every week, that’s already a tablespoon per week…plus most of the cookies and other goodies I bake also use vanilla. Throw in French toast from time to time and other breakfast goodies and that’s even more vanilla. And strangely enough, here in Germany you can only get vanilla sugar. Which is ok…but just... read more

Bourbon Smoked Ribs
We made these smoked ribs last year in our barrel smoker and they turned out SO good. We were so busy trying out other new recipes in our new smoker haze that I never got around to writing about them. So when we made them last weekend again, we knew it was love all over again. I’m not even a fan of Jim Bean but this sauce is to die for. Smoking meat is a bit of an art form, especially when... read more

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
It might seem odd that an American in Germany would be talking about a Mexican holiday…but we love Mexican food around here and I’m a Texas girl so Tex-Mex will always be near and dear to my heart. But did you know that Cinco de Mayo is probably celebrated by more Americans that Mexicans? It’s actually only an optional holiday in Mexico and really only celebrated by the state of Puebla,... read more

Wild garlic pesto
Wild garlic (Allium ursinum AKA bear’s garlic, ramsons or Bärlauch in German) is a wonderful chive cousin that we’re lucky to have growing in our courtyard and a bit in our garden too. At Mackenzie’s christening dinner, we were served a wild garlic soup that was just incredible. I vowed after that to never let our Bärlauch go unharvested again. Last year, I still missed it because I... read more

The best recipe for beef burgers
For many, many years (probably since we moved to Germany), we have been on a quest for a really good burger recipe. We’ve tried several that have been tasty, but they were never just right. Some of them were best suited for spreading on the bun and eating it open-faced; others just lacked flavor and excitement. So Stefan finally nagged me enough about making more homemade hamburger buns (which are... read more
