Sometimes my husband has amazingly smart ideas, even if they are a bit off the wall.

Like when we were standing in Lowe’s this weekend, innocently thinking that we could walk into that store and pick up only a single box of nails to hang some photos on the wall…

As if.

You see, we were looking around in the lighting department, thinking about what sort of lights we could add in our kitchen and things we want to upgrade in the future, when Stefan came across a coil of LED lights.

“You know, we could totally use these to make some mood lighting in the bedroom,” he offered.

And because our condo is a bit cave-like in its level of darkness and I’m always interested in things that will pimp our bedroom and make it more sexy, I said, “Well throw them in the cart!”

The Bed With Lights Concept

We ended up with an 18 foot coil of LED lights which turned out to be just the right size to convert our dark wood furniture into a super nice bed with lights.

There are undoubtedly tons of bedroom lighting ideas available on the Internet and all over Pinterest. But the really neat thing about our new bed with lights is the subtle feeling of it. It’s not an overpowering or glaring amount of light. In fact, you can even fall asleep with them on and not feel that you forgot to turn off a light somewhere.

Plus it was amazingly simple because he just used cable ties to hold the lights in place. The light cable came with mounting brackets which would have required hammering and probably turning the bed upside to allow anyone to really reach under there. And because the lights are LEDs, you don’t have to worry about them getting really hot or sucking down lots of electricity.

For this project, our bed structure was very beneficial because the slats holding the mattress off the floor are wide apart while also being covered by the mattress. So we slid the mattress over to the side, affixed the cable along the outer edge of the three protruding sides with cable ties and – voila! The bed with lights was complete. led-mood-lighting-2

We installed the LED light cable on a timer to make life just a tick easier and better. One of the things which we’ve always disliked about this bed (which was included in our condo when we bought it furnished last year) is that we constantly stub our toes and knock our ankles against it as we walk by. It’s a large king-size bed and the flow of the room

The Outcome

IMO it looks totally awesome. Although the cat is not entirely thrilled that we’ve taken away her dark cave-like hiding space under the bed. But I’m pleased that I can look under the bed again finally and see what’s down there…not just feel around in the dark and guess. I think that once we put hardwood floors down in this room, it will look even more posh.

It’s not the sort of idea I would have come up with a plan or on my own. But it’s super cool and really helps add a little extra touch of class to the room, especially with the dark indigo wall behind the bed.

What other bedroom lighting ideas will we come up with next? It’s hard to say, but if you want to make your own bed with lights, just know that it’s a project you can easily do in an afternoon, including the trip to the home improvement store for cable ties, an LED light cable and a cheap timer. And it can be done for less than $50!
