This post brought to you by Piccadilly Restaurants. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I was a kid, I remember visiting our local cafeteria on a regular basis. It was one of our favorite places to eat because it gave a lot of variety, was affordable and had really tasty food. It was a favorite with my grandparents as well, whenever we went to visit. And there was lots of seating which was always important after church on Sundays!

I loved picking out my meals and gravitated toward the combination of chicken fried steak, mashed potates with gravy and fried okra. I’m a southern girl, what can I say? And once I got those lined up, I didn’t really ever want to switch away to something else.

After not being in a cafeteria for many years (they don’t have anything like that in Germany aside from in office buildings it seems), I was intrigued when Piccadilly Restaurants reached out to me about doing a test night at one of their restaurants. Unfortunately the nearest location to us is in Miami because I would have enjoyed visiting a cafeteria again now with my own daughter.

I know for a fact that if we take Mackenzie there, who is nearly 6 years old now, she would love it. What kid doesn’t like to make their own choices? Thankfully she already makes smart ones, too, especially when it comes to food. I think she would probably chow down on chicken, veggies like broccoli and carrots, and have some fruit to follow up…with pudding to top things off. 🙂

For some, making choices as a cafeteria can be tricky. There were times when I would have been willing to explore new tastes — but not at the expense of one of my tried and true options. Which is why I think the new Homestyle Veggie Plate that Piccadilly is offering for just $5.49 is quite smart.

You can pick out three sides from their menu and one of their fresh baked breads. There are a variety of sides, with healthy options like steamed broccoli, grilled squash, or a fresh salad…or a bit more naughty with fried okra or mac and cheese. Maybe you even want to toe the line and mix-and-match!

Know you can’t finish it all yourself? No problem, order your sides to share! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even let your kids decide what everyone will get to enjoy. And don’t forget that kids eat for less on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am-4pm.

What kinds of sides do you usually like when you go out? Are you a potatoes and green beans kind of person? Do you take the healthy options or go with something special? Or do base everything on your meat decision?
