If you are working from home, creating an efficient workspace can be a task. It’s always nice to have your own space that is dedicated for your work alone even though you are in the comforts of your own home. It not only gives you a place to put all of your work stuff, but it also usually makes you more productive. But you may not have any entire room to dedicate to this purpose and probably don’t want to monopolize a bunch of space around the house. Instead, you’re just looking for a small space where you can do your job and not have it mixed up with all the rest of the mess inside the house.

If your house features a second floor, you surely have stairs which is actually a perfect place to start. If the space under the stairs is big enough for a desk and a chair, then go for it. You might even have enough room for a small table to put a printer or scanner…or a closet nearby for storage of other supplies or whatever else you need to put in there. And everything can be closed up with fold away doors or stuff into a few drawers. This way, the mess that you create when working gets hidden away out of sight. Put in a vintage desk and chair, with complementing storage boxes for all your other stuff and you are good to go. DIY Network even has a tutorial on how to get the job done yourself.

A small vacant corner in your house is a good enough office space. Just think vertically! You can do this by creating a multi-tier wall-mounted home office that maximizes space. Add in some decorations and then poof!

In fact, this is basically what I’ve done in our living room. I have a desk with a topper which is the perfect working space while Mack plays nearby during the day (until she can finally start preschool again) and things like my filing cabinet, big printer and other random office supplies (which I don’t use that often) are in a closet on the other side of the apartment.

Creating your Space Saving Home Office

There are many different ways that you can go about creating your own space saving home office. You just have to be innovative and resourceful about it. Here are some tips to keep in mind which may give you a boost in space that you didn’t previously consider:

  • Place shelves above doorways.
  • Make use of natural light when possible.
  • An L-shape design can work well with small spaces.
  • If  a regular-hinged door is giving you trouble because it needs too much room to swing open, think about replacing it with a curtain or folding door instead.
  • Going vertical is a great way to not only save space but also keep everything looking clean. And don’t just take it part of the way up the wall but all the way to the ceiling to really maximize space.
  • Just because you are saving space, doesn’t mean you can’t decorate. Photos, diplomas, certificates of achievement and other special items can be hung up behind your desk, rest on the shelves above or somewhere else nearby.
  • Use empty space below a window for a lower storage cabinet, filing area or book shelves.
  • Hang shelves high shelves up on the wall and fill them with cool boxes and other organizing items but don’t forget a few knick-knacks to tie the room together and give it more pizazz.
  • Look for multi-functional furniture that can serve a double purpose.
