We have several species of snake here in Tennessee and several of them are venomous but most of the snakes you will find enjoying the shade of your garden are not only benign but can be very beneficial. Garter snakes, green snakes, etc. are voracious predators and love to eat slugs. I no longer garden but back in the days that I did I actually brought snakes and toads to my organic garden and turned them loose to patrol my produce patch.
Guinea fowl were also beneficial, they patrolled my potato patch with their heads hanging low and up-side-down looking for destructive beetles on the underside of leaves where they were hiding. Occasionally they would make a foray into my tomato crop and peck a hole in a tomato, but overall they were my little buddies and did much more good than damage.
