Dear Mackenzie: A month has already come and gone

Dear Mackenzie,

Today you turn one month old. It also happens to be Christmas and we are having a lovely celebration with the family today. It may not be in your honor but it also happens to be your first Christmas…and we are so blessed to have you here with us. You’ve only been in our lives one short month…but we can’t imagine life without you any more.

You are already growing so strong and expressive. You have been lifting your little head and pushing yourself off of us since day one…and you are clearly growing stronger every day.

You learned to use a pacifier this month…you were 2.5 weeks old. You are really amusing to watch when you let the pacifier almost fall out of your mouth…and then suck it back in. But sometimes you aren’t paying enough attention to actually catch it. But for the most part, you still don’t like the pacifier. It’s just not the same as a real nipple, after all, and there’s no good stuff coming out of it either.

You have been growing like a weed so far and won’t be wearing any of the newborn-sized clothes much longer. They used to be huge on you when we brought you home and we could barely get your little feet to stay in the footies on the clothes…but now when you stretch yourself out, your little toes are nearly ready to bust out the end! But you won’t hear me complaining…you have lots more super cute outfits to wear as you grow thanks to all the friends and family who love you so much already and have sent you tons of cute things to wear. But it will be sad to see things like daddy’s first outfit leave the drawer since you’ve only had it on once…guess we have to do some laundry and see if we can’t get at least one more wear out of everything! And lots more photos before it all gets retired :)

I find myself wanting to chew on your hands or your head a lot more often…you’re just so cute I want to eat you. I always found that expression strange and hard to understand, but when I’m hanging out with you it’s just the way I feel. You are so incredible to watch and you are smiling at us all the time now. You also spend a lot more time awake with us and are starting to interact which is an incredible thing to watch. The speed at which a baby develops is just mind blowing. Of course you are the product of two Mensa candidates so we do expect you to be a bit above and beyond the rest!

You’ve helped me learn the importance of being ambidexturous. I never realized how important it is to be able to learn to type with just one hand or be able to eat with either hand until you arrived. Learning to feed you in multiple positions has opened up my world…and yesterday I even learned to hold you in the crook of my leg while I sat on the floor wrapping packages.

I look forward to watching you grow by leaps and bounds in the coming weeks and years…and even though you came as a surprise to us, you have already enriched our lives in ways we can barely begin to grasp.

All my love and I hope you enjoyed your first Christmas,

Mommy
