No good for home appliances
Last year we had to buy a new fridge because the small one we moved here with died on us. Not that we were too upset about it. We were looking for an excuse to buy a side-by-side anyway…but now our washing/drying machine from Siemens has encountered a problem. It’s an all-in-one machine where the dryer is built into the washing machine which are quite common over here in Germany. At first we... read more

Sweeter than Yoohoo :-)
When Stefan got home last night, he managed to get the screws into the door to hold the handles in place so the fridge is more or less complete. Unfortunately we don’t have the correct adapter for the water connection so we will have to wait a few more days because we can test out the ice maker and water dispenser. But when we cooked dinner last night I loaded everything into the fridge and got to... read more

New fridge is here!
Today was almost like Christmas when the new fridge arrived. First I received the disposable cameras we ordered for the housewarming party in the mail which was already a nice surprise. Of course I knew the refrigerator was being delivered today but had no idea when or if there would be any complications with the delivery company. You see, when we bought the fridge, the sales persons (we had two since I... read more

The new fridge is coming
Sometime during the day tomorrow, our new refrigerator will be arriving. We found a side-by-side we like for less than €1,000 which was generally our goal. As it turns out, it’s the cheapest and pretty much the one we liked the most anyway so we’re quite pleased. I don’t have a photo for you yet since the ones on the manufacturers website are teeny, but tomorrow you will get a nice big... read more

Cool enough for ya part 4!
Well, the Bauknecht/Whirlpool repair technician was just here and the verdict he delivered after looking at the fridge for about 15 seconds was devastating. This fridge has officially bit the dust. Because we have two compressors in the bottom, the freezer will continue to run, probably for another 10 years or more…but there is absolutely no hope for the fridge part of the unit. I think the problem... read more

Cool enough for ya part 3!
The saga began yesterday but it’s far from over yet. We managed to get the little fridge inside from the barn and found that we apparently hadn’t de-iced the tiny freezer inside before moving it and the fridge was not alive with mildew. Just what we wanted to deal with. So out came the bleach and we scrubbed the fridge down as best we could which seemed futile at best. It’s about 15 years... read more

Cool enough for ya part 2
So I mentioned earlier this morning that we’re having problems with our fridge. I decided that the first step I would take in attempting to solve the dilemma would be to defrost the freezer. It was long overdue and I thought perhaps this might have something to do with the situation, that the condenser wasn’t working properly because it was so frosty or something along those lines. Talk about... read more

Is it cool enough for ya?
Our refrigerator is on the fritz. It’s not really been normal since we moved in January but now with it being above 90 on some days, it’s clear that the fridge is not performing like it should be. Overnight it gets down to the 60s and the fridge still doesn’t keep anything cold. In fact, I’m not sure that it’s cooling at all now. Lunch meat that I put in there on Friday which... read more

Let there be cold
As many of you know, we live on an old farm here in Germany, built in 1834. Air conditioning is not really big in Germany and only available in newer homes. Having gone from Newf friendly weather in the high 50′s last week to the high 80′s today. Tomorrow it’s supposed to get even hotter – mid 90′s. Not a good progression for our Newfie. While at the hardware store today we... read more

We love our new freezer trunk
We bought a new freezer trunk earlier this week and are currently completely in love with it. We went shopping yesterday to start filling it up and of course because we have houseguests coming this weekend. They won’t all be staying here which takes some pressure off us but we will have a full day of cleaning ahead of us…after we get our car registration done, go to the pet store and make a... read more
