Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on a pumpkin & squash kick around here lately. Roasted pumpkin seeds, pureed pumpkin…and the butternut squash soup. And as if that weren’t enough, I also made some pumpkin bread last week that we have just been devouring! My first taste of pumpkin bread came about 5 months ago when Mack and I went to visit some expats that are new to the area.... read more

Hodgson Mill Baker’s Dream Giveaway
First off, I’d like to say congratulations to Valerie Taylor Mabrey who was selected as the winner for the Down By the River kid’s music giveaway! Normally, I don’t do things like this — but since it’s Thanksgiving this week and I’m feeling a bit crazy anyway, I am taking advantage of an opportunity that I just couldn’t pass up. You see, when I’m given the... read more

Leftover steak sandwiches
After I posted about how much we’d enjoyed the grillades we made with T-bone steak leftovers, Charlie Sommers, whose comments you may have seen before full of incredible recipe suggestions, told me that his favorite thing to make with steak leftovers are sandwiches, especially when it’s the larger roast side of the t-bone. If you have leftovers from this great piece of meat, cooked medium or ... read more

Homemade Lebkuchen with Love
Christmas in Germany cannot be celebrated without Lebkuchen. They are a traditional German cookie that is a bit like gingerbread, but usually has a bit more substance added to the dough like carrots, raisins and nuts. They were originally created by Medieval monks in Franconia, Germany in the 13th century and bakers in Nuremberg were recorded baking them as early as 1395. Nürnberger Lebkuchen are now... read more

HBin5 Whole Wheat Flatbreads
As you may have noticed, I’m all about trying out new things lately. So when I heard there was a new book out about baking bread in 5 minutes a day, I was intrigued. Then I discovered that one of my favorite foodie bloggers, Big Black Dogs, was actually hosting a challenge to try out the recipes in the book over the next year. So naturally I had to jump at the chance. I won’t be sharing any of... read more

Blueberry Zucchini Bread
As you may recall, we are huge fans of zucchini bread in this house and I make a couple loaves almost every week. Now that Stefan is back at work and I want him to have something in his belly every morning, I’m back to baking. But I was feeling a bit bored with the usual zucchini bread and had a bunch of blueberries in the fridge to use up…and so this recipe was born. I basically just took my... read more

How to make vanilla extract
One thing I use a lot of in this house is vanilla. Since I bake zucchini bread every week, that’s already a tablespoon per week…plus most of the cookies and other goodies I bake also use vanilla. Throw in French toast from time to time and other breakfast goodies and that’s even more vanilla. And strangely enough, here in Germany you can only get vanilla sugar. Which is ok…but just... read more

Using my new silicon baking mat
When I was recently asked by the German cookware site KuechenUndHaushalt.de if I would like to review a Lurch FlexiForm silicon baking mat, I jumped at the chance. I have been admiring these mats for a while, especially now that silicon products have had some time to evolve and work out their kinks. About 5 years ago, I bought some cheap silicon baking pans from Tchibo and I really didn’t like them... read more

World’s Best Cornbread
When I was young, my mom used to make cornbread all the time. I grew up in Texas — it’s a staple there. But cornmeal here in Germany is not quite as course as the cornmeal you buy in America. And it can be rather hard to find. I guess it’s really more cornflour than cornmeal which creates a much more cake-like cornbread but also makes some traditional cornbread recipes taste downright... read more

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies
Stefan is a chocoholic. He may not like me mentioning it here, but it’s true. He might need to seek therapy. No, it’s not really that serious, but if there is no chocolate in the house he does get a bit edgy. So instead of making the usual chocolate chip cookies this week (in my head I bake once a week making zucchini bread and some sort of treats; reality proves otherwise but I was getting a... read more
