To screed….or not to screed

Well, the screed was ordered yesterday. 1.5 cubic meters should do it for the guesthouse. Macky finally dragged himself out here yesterday to finish the plumbing. He hung the water heater and everything seemed to be ok. After he left (without testing, and yes it’s our fault for spacing out on that too) he left and said he would be back on Friday with someone to help us do the screed. Well, after he... read more

The windows are here!!

The neighbor came by this morning with the door he picked up yesterday. It looked great. He immediately took the next one and meanwhile it’s 3.30pm and he is finally done with all three. We had to do a little dry wall modification because the fit was just too close on one door, but all in all it went smoothly. We love the windows. They came out even better than we had expected. Now just a good... read more

New photos from the guest house still in progress

We’re waiting for our contractors to arrive this morning and Stefan is off on his first run of the week to Hagebau to pick up some corner profiles, a few more sheets of drywall and a sack of filler for the screw holes & seams in the drywall. Our electrician is also on his way over to run more cabling through the barn and get the fuse box all wired up in the guest house. The two contractors are... read more

Lots of news….

A lot has happened on the farm in the last few days and we haven’t been awake enough in the last few evenings to keep up with Blogging. Things are really moving forward though. Stefan was quite successful in getting the plumbing started. Actually, we got everything done except connecting the various parts of the piping around the room together. Mostly, we left the four different sections apart for... read more

Before and After: New Bathroom Upstairs

When we bought the house, there was only one bathroom indoors. We also have an outhouse in the courtyard but how practical is it to run outside in the middle of winter to do your business? Certainly better than nothing but still not a pleasant thought. The bathroom downstairs was added in the early 1980′s (hence the love avocado coloring it once had) but unfortunately didn’t include a standing... read more

Outdoor fires are so hot right now

I saw this extremely cool tutorial on how to build your own outdoor fire pit and I’m wondering where we could set one of these up without needing to move it…which of course would be impossible the way this thing is constructed. But I suppose it could work if it was built in the garden somewhere…which isn’t a terrible idea in my opinion…but of course our first focus for that... read more

From horses to house guests

For the past week or so we have been thinking hard and putting some of our ideas for the horse stall transformation down on paper. Unfortunately we haven’t had much luck drawing everything out in Google SketchUp. As much potential as that program has, it really isn’t all that easy for a novice to use. So we may have to break down one of these days and buy a home design software. But for the... read more

Self-Reliant Searches Vol. 3

Another Thursday, another list of searches that led to this blog. It’s a holiday here in Germany but the stock market is open and Stefan actually has to work. We were hoping to use the day to get some things cleaned up in the garden and do some work with the plants but that will just have to wait until the weekend. On to the searches… pictures of hagebau stores Hmm, ok. Well our Hagebau store... read more

Self-Reliant Searches Vol. 2

I intended to post this yesterday since I was a bit under the weather on Thursday…but I just didn’t make it. But here they are nonetheless… self waters diy tomatoes Well, I interpret this to mean someone must want to set up tomato plants with some sort of self-watering system and they want to do it cheaply or perhaps make the system themselves. We are using a Gardena microdrip system... read more

The greenhouse is FINALLY finished

Ok, so there are still a few small tasks to complete like building potting benches and we have to construct the upper windows still and attach those…but for all intent and purposes, the greenhouse is finished. We can move things in there if we want, especially after next week when we hope to finally get the irrigation system hooked up. And since the frost free date should be right around the corner,... read more
