Eating our first harvest of veggies
Tonight at dinner we ate our first zucchinis and cucumbers from our greenhouse. The zucchinis were still rather small but Stefan prepared them with lots of fresh black pepper and salt, diced onions, garlic and some white wine and they turned our really tasty. Then we turned our two cucumbers into a salad with vinegar, oil, dill and salt and pepper. We coupled this with chicken breasts and a couple sweet... read more

A garden update
As promised in my previous post, I just went out into the garden to take a few pictures to share of the plants. Normally I would wait a while but since the photos in the last post are 9 days old anyway, there has been a lot more growth lately in the greenhouse. The new trash container just arrived as well and I wanted to do a post on the houseblog about what we will be doing with it so it was the perfect... read more

No searches this week
Normally I would have posted my weekly searches blog yesterday but there really weren’t any new searches leading to this blog this week. Well, there were plenty about Rob Rainford and more of the same from the previous weeks search posts, but nothing that made me want to blog about the topics. So instead I am finally posting some photos of the garden which I recall I said I would do earlier this week... read more

Gooseberry harvest & our first chili
Today we harvested gooseberries from the bush in our garden. It’s amazing how much fruit was packed on this one bush. It’s actually about 4 kilos (9 pounds) of berries so now we’re trying to figure out what we will do with all this fruit. We don’t eat too many preserves so that isn’t really ideal for us. But we are thinking that perhaps we will use at least part of them to try... read more

Self-Reliant Searches Vol. 3
Another Thursday, another list of searches that led to this blog. It’s a holiday here in Germany but the stock market is open and Stefan actually has to work. We were hoping to use the day to get some things cleaned up in the garden and do some work with the plants but that will just have to wait until the weekend. On to the searches… pictures of hagebau stores Hmm, ok. Well our Hagebau store... read more

Rape, pillage & murder
This morning I went out to the garden to set some new beer traps and jars of cornmeal for the slugs. They have been devouring our peanut plants, strawberries and corn plants for the past couple of weeks and it’s time to bring this to an end. Otherwise the only thing that will survive are the strawberry plants with no fruit at all…and big, fat, happy slugs of course. While I was out there I was... read more

Fruit galore
Since we have quite a few fruit trees around the farm, I thought I would share some photos. First, our grapevine growing in the courtyard along the wall of the barn. Last year it actually produced quite a few grapes and we even got to sample a few before the birds ate them all. They were quite tasty although there is not nearly enough for a bottle of wine Moving on to the backyard, we have the gooseberry... read more

The plants are back in the ground
I’m going to try to catch up on a few LONG overdue posts so here’s a start. May 1st was a holiday here in Germany. Since S was out of town for business during the weekend, he decided to take Monday off so we would basically still have a weekend…and a very short work week. Always a nice thing. Naturally the time off was spent working on things around the house…and we FINALLY put... read more
