Our garden in 2009 – a wrap up

Some would argue that it’s a bit early to wrap up posts on the garden for the year; but as far as fruits and vegetables go, things are pretty much done out there. There are still a few chili peppers hanging on in this cool weather, doing surprisingly well actually. And we have a few zucchini and eggplant that should become something, not to mention our very first brussel sprouts which I imagine will... read more

No greenhouse love for you

When we woke up this morning, we thought we had our weekend all planned out. Get up, feed Mack, walk the dog, down some Burger King (I know, the healthy choice, right?), drop off the dead computer at the PC repair place, and finally visit Hornbach to buy the twin wall sheet panels for our greenhouse. (I don’t know if that means anything to you, but I mean those plastic panels you put on greenhouses.... read more

Another hour in the garden…

Just spent another bit of time pulling weeds, trimming trees and just trying to get a grip on things in the garden. Overwhelming is certainly one way of describing it! I took some more photos but I barely notice the progress myself…well, actually, I can see the progress in the photos! Woohoo I primarily focused on the right side of the garden today, trying to trim down the grass and cut back the... read more

Cayenne harvesting

We got quite a few nice peppers from our cayenne plants despite not really giving much love or attention to them. We decided to harvest a few of the peppers before we went away last week and hung them up in our kitchen to dry. We tried a little piece of one of them in our chicken penne arrabiata dish the other night but probably could have used a tiny bit more. Stefan tried them once before and they were... read more

An excess of tomatoes leads to…Southern Spaghetti Sauce

…me in the kitchen making pasta sauce from fresh crushed tomatoes, a task which sounds more daunting than it is. When I was at the grocery story last week, I picked up some ground beef to make spaghetti sauce. I have been using a Southern-style meat sauce recipe for over a year now that I picked up on allrecipes.com. I started out just following the recipe but now I’ve totally changed it up to... read more

Eggplants, chilies and tomatoes – oh my!

Once again it’s been a while since our last garden update so here goes… I mentioned once or twice that we are giving our lettuce a try in window boxes along our courtyard and at the front of the house. These are the plants by the courtyard which are really thriving. They apparently get just enough sun during the day and I water them all the time too. We’re looking forward to starting to... read more

Tomatoes galore

So far, everything is still thriving in the greenhouse and our tomatoes are now showing some massive signs of life. Here’s a general view when you glance in the direction of the tomatoes…. As you can probably notice (click on the image to make it larger), we have lots of little tomatoes all over our plants finally. I think the drastic pruning really helped even though we probably did wait a... read more

Be careful with ammonia!!!

I wrote in my post yesterday, Slug hunting with ammonia, that I had sprayed some of the plants and whatever slugs I found in the greenhouse yesterday morning with slugs. I did in fact do that and it wasn’t until Stefan came home in the evening and went to check on everything in the greenhouse that I realized what a reject I am sometimes… While researching what I needed to use ammonia to kill... read more

Fabulous Farmhouse Searches Vol. 6

This will be a somewhat short list of searches this week but at last there are a few new ones to talk about. I tried to keep them short today because I have a lot of other stuff to get done but keep searching everyone! does egg plant grow on a vine No. Eggplants are not viney plants like cucumbers but more like a zucchini in that everything branches out of the middle of the plant. Similar to a tomato,... read more

Slug hunting with ammonia

Last weekend we finally managed to get our hands on some ammonia. You actually have to buy it at the pharmacy here and they actually had to order it for me which was almost amusing. Turned out to be €11 for 1 liter which is a whole lot more than you’d pay at in the U.S. but what can you do? Not exactly something they’ll let you ship over here and judging by the smell I think the stuff we have... read more
