Eating our first harvest of veggies
Tonight at dinner we ate our first zucchinis and cucumbers from our greenhouse. The zucchinis were still rather small but Stefan prepared them with lots of fresh black pepper and salt, diced onions, garlic and some white wine and they turned our really tasty. Then we turned our two cucumbers into a salad with vinegar, oil, dill and salt and pepper. We coupled this with chicken breasts and a couple sweet... read more

How does your garden grow?
I try to keep the garden related posts to a minimum on here since we have a separate blog for that now and because I figure that most people renovating their homes don’t necessarily have the time of interest left over for gardening. But our plants are exploding in our greenhouse and I thought it might be about time to share a progress report. As promised in my previous post on our Self-Reliant... read more

A garden update
As promised in my previous post, I just went out into the garden to take a few pictures to share of the plants. Normally I would wait a while but since the photos in the last post are 9 days old anyway, there has been a lot more growth lately in the greenhouse. The new trash container just arrived as well and I wanted to do a post on the houseblog about what we will be doing with it so it was the perfect... read more

No searches this week
Normally I would have posted my weekly searches blog yesterday but there really weren’t any new searches leading to this blog this week. Well, there were plenty about Rob Rainford and more of the same from the previous weeks search posts, but nothing that made me want to blog about the topics. So instead I am finally posting some photos of the garden which I recall I said I would do earlier this week... read more

Irrigation system nearly complete
Well we seem to be having a bit of a problem with the timer but we haven’t been out there yet when the sprinklers are supposed to be on so things may indeed be running perfectly. We will be going out to check on everything at 7 pm and then I need to make sure to check it tomorrow at 7 am and noon so we can go away without worrying that all our plants will be dead when we return. We also managed to... read more

We’ve got a rain delay
We did make some progress today but had a pretty massive thunderstorm roll in that is causing us a delay. We started working our way from the barn to the greenhouse with the watering system connections. We had to remove the temporary faucet we put on the water connection we have in the garden. This ended up being more difficult than we thought because the pipes didn’t want to come apart but we... read more

A watering system weekend…and more
This weekend we will be finishing the setup of the watering system in the greenhouse and into the raised beds. We will be going out of town on Thursday and not return until Sunday so we absolutely have to have the drip system set up by then or the plants are definitely going to die. They cannot go more than 24 hours without drying up and there will be nothing left of them after 3 days of heat. So tomorrow... read more

Self-Reliant Searches Vol. 3
Another Thursday, another list of searches that led to this blog. It’s a holiday here in Germany but the stock market is open and Stefan actually has to work. We were hoping to use the day to get some things cleaned up in the garden and do some work with the plants but that will just have to wait until the weekend. On to the searches… pictures of hagebau stores Hmm, ok. Well our Hagebau store... read more

Greenhouse update
I think I promised another update quite a while ago and although you did see a lot of the plants in the recent video, I think photos are able to show the progress much better. We moved the plants into the greenhouse May 17th or 18th. The only reason I can be sure that it was one of these days is because we had the reunion party here on the 19th and the plants were sitting on our kitchen table until we had... read more

The current state of our garden
Although we have made some progress in the garden over the past month or so, we still have a whole lot of work to do. We thought we would post a quick video update just to let you see what we have done and how some of the plants are coming along in the greenhouse and one finished raised bed. Perhaps in some of the upcoming weeks we will get inspired to do a bit of weeding and finish up a few more of the... read more
