Travel chaos in Europe

We’ve had a friend staying in our guest house for the past week who is currently in the process of moving to Africa. And it’s not exactly a simple move either because her furniture is staying in Frankfurt in her apartment which has been sublet (which has become a nightmare of its own), some of her stuff is being moved to her parents in London and the rest is going with her to Marekesh. She woke... read more

The walls are looking goooood

So the neighbor came over last Saturday at 10 (he overslept and was supposed to be here at and finished up the walls of the guest house. Read about him starting last Thursday here with previous photos. It’s really looking good and now we just need to get out there and paint. Since we should have enough paint left for those walls, we might just get to that in one of the next weekends…but no... read more

Just putzing around

Ok, in German “putz” is what you call the plaster or stucco you put on walls. So yeah, I’m just making a bit of word play. Call it your German lesson for the day. We asked one of our neighbors who happens to be a general contractor and painter if he would come by when he had some free time and cover up where we bricked in the bathroom window of the guest house and also around the corner... read more

A progress report from 3 long days of work!

Well, it’s taken a few days to recover but the marathon of work while Stefan’s parents were here has come to a close for now. We still have a few other small project that we are working on (like the mudroom which I’ll post about in a bit) but we accomplished some very big tasks over the 3 days they were here working with us. I know you’re curious about everything so here... read more

Catching up on things

Ok, it’s been too long once again since I last posted. But that doesn’t mean things have been at a standstill around here! For one, we got the glass replaced in the front door! And I got the bill yesterday which only came out to €63 so we’re pretty pleased about that as well. Tomorrow we are going to finally buy the floor trim for the guest house so that when Stefan’s parents come... read more

Guest house photos – finally

I will start by emphasizing that I don’t think these photos even remotely do the room justice…but I’m no professional photographer and I was waiting on the repairman so I apologize. I’ll start you off with a view into the bedroom, when you first open the door. We’re really thrilled with the color on the walls in here and although it’s not a huge space, it’s very... read more

How’s the guest house?

We certainly should have written about this already but with all the chaos of the holidays, we just haven’t found the time. But Stefan is back to work now and so am I so perhaps the blogs will become a bit more frequent again You may be wondering how things turned out with the guest house – well it’s not perfect yet but at least livable. We had some major issues with attaching the... read more

We’re nearing the end!!

Once again it has been very quiet from our side from a while, but mostly that’s only because we have been working so hard on the guesthouse. Friday we took a run to IKEA for the first part of the furniture (we are going back tomorrow for the rest) and the electrician returned with the lackie to put in the shower drain and surprisingly also a bill from Macky. Too sick to call, but not sick enough to... read more

The saga of the shower drain…..

While planning our guesthouse bathroom, Macky came up with the idea of using a shower grate, rather than a normal drain. A good idea, given that we have three rainwater showerheads in there. He has been meaning to bring it by for weeks now, and when the screed was poured last week he said he would be back wednesday of last week, and then again delayed ultimately saying he would come Monday of this week. He... read more

Playing with colors

The main reason to Hagebau last night (besides getting grout for the tile) was to pick up paint for the guesthouse. We originally inteded to go with white, but that just ended up being too much. Especially walking into the guest house it felt like the white was overpowering. Since we are not usually fans of walls being painted other than white we took a good amount of time playing with color samples. For... read more
