The quiet arrival of 2009

Last night we had a quiet little New Years celebration at home with Mack and my mom. Dinner was a meat fondue with meatballs, filets of chicken and beef, and four dipping sauces. We had salad of lamb’s lettuce with champagne dressing and a baguette along with it. Very tasty stuff! We had quite a bit of meat and sauces (which were awesome) left over so we’re going to have it again tonight. We... read more

Making new friends

On the same day that Ayla showed us that she is an environmental doggie, she also got to meet a fun little puppy. Usually Ayla was the one terrorizing older dogs when she was little…this little guy was acting just like her, thinking he was the big dog on the block. It was quite amusing to see her put him in his place which used to happen to her all the time. It was also really something to see how... read more

Get the dog away from my children……

Thanksgiving is more than a week behind us now, but this is something that we just need to post about! Better late than never. We had a big Thanksgiving feast at our house last Saturday (Thanksgiving isn’t a holiday here in Germany, so people have to work) with 10 people – 8 adults and 2 children….one Newfie. The guest list was comprised of long time friends of ours and a couple we met... read more

Our lantern festival – Sunday night

Because of our housewarming party, we didn’t get to attend the festival on Saturday night. Some of our guests did go down to see the parade pass through though, which actually lasted about 2 hours and featured 25 organizations and 7 marching bands. The all came back totally excited about what they’d seen so we knew we had to make sure to catch the parade when it passed through again on Sunday... read more

Our lantern festival – Saturday

Not much happens during the day on Saturday but since we were preparing for our own big party, we didn’t really notice. We ordered bread to serve at the party from our local bakery and picked it up on Saturday morning and you could see a bit of the party rush there, already. Most of the bread was sold out by 9 am (which isn’t completely atypical) and there was a line out the front door. It... read more

Our lantern festival – Friday night

The 56th Annual Büdesheimer Laternenfest (lantern festival) officially ended yesterday. I have to say that we are both a bit sad because it was a whole lot of fun – and we were amazed at the amount of effort this little town put into the event…not to mention the fact that so many locals seem to celebrate during the entire event. For that reason, I’m going to break up the posts about this... read more

Cleaning up after the party

Make no mistake – throwing a party at your home is a massive undertaking! The more people you have, the more chaos may ensue. But if you have some friends and family you can trust who are glutton enough to volunteer to help you during the event – accept the offer and thank them profusely! Stefan and I have been planning this party for several months now. We went over nearly every detail, from... read more

The housewarming party

We had our housewarming party here on Saturday night and although it was a lot of fun, we’re both happy to have it behind us now. We ended up with about 50 guests and around 15 children ranging in age from a few weeks to 5 years old. Nearly everyone who said they’d be attending made it here and a few that we didn’t invite too…but I’ll come back to that later. One of the things... read more

That’s a lot of chili

With just over a week to go to our housewarming party, I am now in full speed ahead mode to get things accomplished around here. This morning I replanted our fig tree so that it has some space to grow finally and will retain a bit of water. I’ve moved it into the courtyard as well but have to keep an eye on the dog who always seems to feel the need to attack our plants at some point. Boredom really... read more

Sweeter than Yoohoo :-)

When Stefan got home last night, he managed to get the screws into the door to hold the handles in place so the fridge is more or less complete. Unfortunately we don’t have the correct adapter for the water connection so we will have to wait a few more days because we can test out the ice maker and water dispenser. But when we cooked dinner last night I loaded everything into the fridge and got to... read more
