10 projects we are working on or wrapping up
There’s been a lot going on around our farm lately. We’ve entertained quite a few guests, and each one has helped spur on our cleanliness level and a bit of decorating. We’ve been trying to do a little bit here and there to lesson the extremity of some of our projects. A few of them are going to be a lot easier if we can get our helper guy over here to take care of some things…and a... read more

Finally giving the mudroom some more love
This past weekend the weather here was pretty iffy; quite chilly and raining off and on…so we decided to tackle a project inside that has been looming over us for years. In fact, it’s been almost two years since we last did any major work in our mudroom…which is a shame because we walk through that room every day and I’m probably in there 10-20 times a day, even when I’m only... read more

Another little project for the garden to help us enjoy harvesting
I spent 2 hours cutting grass with the scythe, pulling weeds and pruning bushes in the garden Friday. The grass was 1-3 feet tall back there and just getting out of hand. Mackenzie was kind enough to sleep through the entire thing which allowed me to really get down to business. I was covered in sweat when I was finished and not only from the slighty warm temps! I couldn’t believe how sore I... read more

Erasing the dog residue in the entry way
I wanted to post this almost two weeks ago but things have been a bit hectic around here (what’s new right?) so I’m only getting to this now. Before my dad and his wife Barbara arrived here in Germany on April 28th, we were trying to get a few things done to spruce up the place a bit. One such area that needed serious attention was our entry way. If you have a Newfoundland who usually sleeps in... read more

Please join us in welcoming Jake’s Chair
We have talked about Jake’s Chair quite a few times on this blog, but so far there has been too much going on around here to take the time to actually build one. Now that construction of the guest house has kind of been on hold for the past two weeks we have finally decided to tackle this project. You can find the instructions here The project definitely wasn’t very hard and the creator of... read more

How long is this going to take?
With all these projects currently going on around the farm it’s easy to get lost in the process. We decided to prove how big of a geek we are and installed Microsoft Project to keep track of everything. This might be a bit of an overkill, but you can’t beat the features this software has when trying to keep track of little tasks and errands. Having never done a project like this before, one... read more

Now it’s getting somewhere good
This weekend we worked ourselves hard again and managed to paint the entire chicken coop, brick out a hole in the wall leading to the outhouse and dungheap (which the dog loved to use when we first got this house and Ayla smelled just lovely after romping around in the pile of waste) and laid out the wooden tiles just to see how it all looks. You might recall our post from last weekend and the work we did... read more

Back to farm life
We’ve been on vacation for the last 3 1/2 days and I think all of us are happy to be home. We went to Locarno, Switzerland, to do some climbing, one of our other passions aside from the farm. It was nice to take some time away but at the same time we were also wishing we had used the time to work around here. But hubby has the rest of the week off so we will be working hard in the garden to get our... read more

Working on the Garden
You may have noticed that it has been quiet on the blog for a few days. Not that we have been lazy, but lately as the weather is getting nicer we are spending more time on the vegetable garden in the back. Since we have said that we will focus most of the garden stuff on our other blog, selfreliantyuppies.blogspot.com there are more recent posts there. But we figure reworking the garden is also a major... read more

It’s almost like a peep show…
For weeks (well even months now since we’ve been living here two months already) we have been talking about getting curtains to put back in the bathroom downstairs. There were once lace curtains which hung on the window itself so they wouldn’t interfere when the window needs to be opened. We took the curtains down to wash them and never put them back up because it would have been more hassle... read more
