In keeping with my attack on the kitchen, I recently realized that also our silverware drawers in the kitchen are fairly organized, there is still a bit of chaos in there. So when we purchased the plastic tubs for the spice storage, I also grabbed a few random small trays for the various kitchen accessories we have that have been floating around in the drawer.
And as I got started on the project, I realized that perhaps it would be a good idea to switch two of our kitchen drawers completely. That meant the regular silverware and knives would be right next to the stove. And the other stuff would be moved more out of the way under the coffee maker. It’s not an idea I really gave much thought to, but Stefan was fully behind it (and I think perhaps secretly wishing and praying I would do that for years).
Whenever you do a project like this, it is most important to make sure you have a very good helper… 😉
Now I know that there is still a bit of clutter in here, but I did manage to let go of a few things during this process. And after using these drawers for about a week, I have to say that they are so much more practical.
The silverware we use all the time is just across from the dishwasher now…and the only time I run into complications about getting something out is when someone is standing there cutting stuff or Mack is helping. But honestly, it’s just an excuse to sweep her out of the way and interact with my family a little bit more.
I didn’t take any before shots of this drawer, but this is Mack’s stuff…and the little basket in here makes all the difference in the world! Now if I could just find some self-cleaning bottles…. On the other hand, I did realize this week that if I wash one bottle while I’m filling up another for her to drink, I almost always have clean bottles when we need them. Simple I know. But I have really come to dread washing these things lately!
Next up on my list is attacking a bookshelf upstairs that has a bunch of books in it that we don’t currently read but also don’t want to get rid of (climbing guides, tourism stuff, etc). The long term plan is to build a useful bookshelf at the top of our stairs…but for now, I have got to get the Billy IKEA shelf out of there before the thing falls over on someone. It’s ugly, a hazard and I know someone will come pick it up quickly once I put it on Freecycle!
Are you in decluttering & organizing mode at your home? We’d love to hear about it! Come link up at Pancakes & French Fries Useful & Beautiful William Morris Project.
Good job, Tiffany! Isn’t it interesting how the “smallest” projects can sometimes make the biggest difference?
Looks great–I have a few drawers that need tackling too!
Good job! Organizing even the smallest drawer in the most used room of the house is no small task!
Amazing job! I remember when I cleaned out my silverware drawer how good it felt. Actually, it should be due for another cleaning pretty soon.
I love, love, love that picture of your daughter! On saw it in the link up and smiled big. Precious!
Those little reorganization projects sometimes have the greatest impact. Easier to unload the dishwasher, easier to set the table, easier for the rest of the family to find things and help out… 🙂 Great work! Reminds me that I need to get a few more little boxes for our kitchen drawers.
Well done! Once you get them organized in a way that works, you don’t have to organize them again for a long time.
I love that you not only cleaned, decluttered, and organized your drawers; but you moved them around too! Nice! Having the items you want or need in the place you will use them most is the best.
Oh, the kitchen drawers! They seem to need cleaning out on a regular basis at my house. Great work here, and love the picture of your daughter, too!
Your helper is a really special secret to your success!
Hope you read today how much your 15 min. timer idea is changing my life for the better. Thanks!
nice! found Thieves recipe for mold which is what I was looking for!
