Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, rump steak or filet tips, sliced very thin
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sake
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh garlic (about 3 medium-large cloves)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped jalapeño (about 1 whole pepper)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon roasted sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the beef with soy sauce, sake and cornstarch; set aside.
  2. Heat the wok and oil. Stir-fry garlic and jalapeño until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the beef plus salt, sugar, pepper and sesame oil and stir-fry over high heat just until no longer pink outside, 2–3 minutes.
  3. Serve with steamed rice.

Notes

Add sliced carrots, bell pepper and onions for a more varied meal. Freeze the beef about 30 minutes (or slice before fully thawed) to make thin slicing easier.
