After going to bed rather late last night (you can read about our excellent dinner at our other blog here) and getting only about 5 hours of sleep, we are back on the road again and on our way to Florence. It’s about a 400 km drive which hubby and I might usually do in 5 hours or so but we’re guessing it will take longer with our friends in tow.

The first part of the drive has not been that nice and it actually took us quite a while to get from Punta Sabbioni into the modern part of Venice (which has none of the charm of the historic city on the canals that everyone generally thinks of) and then out of the city altogether. At the moment we’re passing through rather marshy land and skirting the ocean a bit still. Not necessarily all that pretty to look at and it’s fairly overcast again today but Ayla doesn’t mind at all.

Since she usually guards the premises most of the night, we figure she must be happy to be in the truck and driving which means she can sleep peacefully knowing she doesn’t have to watch out for us so much. She’s been so great on this trip so far and only barks when she hears a “threat” or another dog really going crazy. She’s definitely more vocal while camping than while we’re at home or anywhere else but since she has to be on the look out for us all the time, we understand and really appreciate having her watching over us.

Well, after not doing much traveling at all for a while, we will be traveling quite a bit in the coming week. We are taking a trip to Tuscany from Germany with the Defender, the dog and will be joined by two friends who are driving along in their VW bus.

You might wonder where we’ve been the last few months and what’s been going on…and of course what happened to the Iberian Peninsula trip. For starters, we have been blessed to find an amazing old farm house which will need a bit of renovating and has taken up most of our free weekends for the last month. It is full of old antiques and other odds and ends in various states of disrepair and we needed to clean a lot of things out before we could start the renovations. So, about 140 working hours later, it’s nearly ready to start having walls removed and so on. That is also a main reason we have cut the vacation short. Stefan is also in the process of starting a new job at his current company, moving from research to sales. This has also put a limit on the block of time he was able to take for the vacation. Otherwise, it was looking like the summer might be over here in Germany but thankfully that has recently changed. We’ve been having temps in the upper 70’s and it’s been really lovely overall. This of course is even better when we consider that Ayla can be much more comfortable in her fur coat.

Yesterday, we did our last day of running around and buying everything we needed for the trip…and of course a few things that were also just really nice to have lol. And this morning, we loaded everything up in the Defi and started out at about 1:30 pm. We have about 45 minutes to go until we reach Stefan’s parents house where we will be staying for the night. Then we will set out at about 11:00 am for Italy tomorrow morning.

We weren’t really feeling like the vacation feelings were with us yet and it still seems a bit unreal that we are actually going away for a week. But we both are very ready for a vacation and I think tomorrow our outlook may be much more focused on the trip.

We’ll be back at you on the flipside…
