Warmer weather is on the way for many of us, so what better time of year to give your home a deep clean. Depending on how big your property is, it can take a while to get through it, so there’s no time like the present.
Here are 9 tips on how to deep clean your home.
Take out the trash
One of the first things you should do before starting a spring clean is to free your home of any rubbish and get rid of anything you no longer want or use. The less you have to clean, the better, and the greater the surface area you have to work in, the easier it will be.
Declutter every room before you start cleaning, and it will make it a far more enjoyable task. Freeing your home of unwanted belongings will give you lots of additional space and can be good for the soul too.
Wash your windows
If your windows are dirty, it can reduce the amount of natural light your home receives, so giving them a thorough clean can make a big difference. Window vacs are a fabulous invention and can vastly reduce the time it takes, but a good window squeegee will also do a decent job. Once you have cleaned the glass both inside and out, give your window frames a good wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
Kitchen cabinets
Kitchen cabinets typically end up covered in grime, grease, spillages, and crumbs, so deep cleaning them can be rather time-consuming. Empty the contents of each and give them a good clean with an antibacterial spray and a damp cloth.
As well as doing the inside of the units, make sure you do the doors too. If they feel particularly grimy from the likes of cooking oil or mucky fingerprints, sugar soap is easy to apply and should lift it off in no time.
Clean your electronics
Most of us have gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, and computers but have you ever considered how dirty they get? They are constantly being used and so can harbor a lot of bacteria.
Firstly, wipe them down with a soft lint-free cloth, then use glass cleaning wipes to remove any fingerprints from the screen. If you have a large family and want something perfect for the job, you can buy dedicated electronics cleaners to help keep your technology clean and dust-free.
Have carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned
Carpets and upholstery can be given a new lease of life when professionally cleaned, so it makes sense to have it done at least once a year. There are cleaning machines you can hire which may work out cheaper than having a professional do it, but if you want the best finish and the minimum amount of hassle, paying someone to do it for you is probably the easiest route to take.
Don’t forget your baseboards
Baseboards can be easily forgotten about when undertaking your regular cleaning routine, but they are a must when it comes to a deep spring clean. Move all your furniture into the middle of the room and give them all a good wipe down with a damp absorbent cloth.
Disinfect door handles
As we know from the recent pandemic, door handles are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. Giving them a good wipe down with some antibacterial wipes or a wet cloth and spray should be enough to kill anything that may be lurking. It will also help to get rid of stubborn stains and finger marks.
Vacuum your mattresses
Dust mites are so tiny they can’t be detected by the naked eye – which is probably just as well given how many of them are probably living in your mattress! Vacuuming will not completely eradicate the issue, of course, but it is worth grabbing your handheld vac and giving them a good going over.
Pressure wash your driveway
It’s not only the inside of your home that you need to consider when spring cleaning. If your driveway or garden paving is looking a little weather-beaten, power washing can give it a new lease of life. It can get quite messy, and you will probably get very wet, so it’s a wise idea to wear waterproofs and wellington boots before you start.
When cleaning block paving, be mindful that you may lose lots of the infill sand, so if this is the case, replace it as soon as possible, or some of the blocks may start to loosen, which can end up being costly.
