We had another meeting with the architect this evening. He wanted to show us the new plans he’s made for the kitchen/dining room area and see if we are all on the same page there now.

The new plans look good and we are rather happy with the new basic design. Of course in the end we may change it up a bit depending on the cabinet space we decide we need or don’t need but it’s looking quite good. There will be island which will separate the kitchen itself from the dining room but still leave us a very large open space. We had also discussed putting in a fireplace in this room but have decided that it will be a very costly expense and in the end probably detract from the exterior of the house once the steel chimney is put up.

I can’t really remember if I mentioned it in the last post when we met with him, but we are also hoping to expose the brick roof throughout the room which should give a nice, cozy feeling to this room and we will lay some sort of tile or stone flooring in there which should be slip resistant for the dog and cool for her to lay on during the summer. The architect also brought up using in-floor heating as there is currently no heating in there at all so we’re interested to see what sort of estimates he’s going to come up with.

We also got a ballpark figure on when we can possible move in. We were personally hoping that we might be able to spend Christmas in the house. We knew it was a bit of a long shot but we can dream, right? Unfortunately, he’s informed us something like February 1st will be more realistic. Talk about a blow to the spirits. Insulation must be laid in the new kitchen/dining room and they use a wet insulation here which looks a lot like asphalt, and this can take up to 10 weeks to dry. Removing walls and building new ones in this area he assumes will take something like 3 days but until the floor is done, things will be at a stand-still.

We are certainly disappointed but since we don’t even have a clear title to the house yet, we still can’t start anything so it’s all just a waiting game for a while longer. The architect is supposed to start gathering bids for some of the various projects and hopefully will have some decent prospects for us that won’t put us far beyond the budget we’ve set for all this.
