I have so much to say these days, but my laptop has been standing in the way of my blogging progress. It’s also been hampering a lot of work I need to do with my laptop. It’s just not that easy to keep Mackenzie out of trouble in my office, and I can hardly move my PC into the living room just to get some work done. So I’ve been focusing on getting the house a bit cleaned up instead. I still have a long way to go. π
The problem with my laptop is that it’s reaching the end of its useful life. Have you noticed that laptops today seem to be built to last about 2 years and then they just sort of die? I have a Gateway that has been a complete work horse since I bought it in April 2008. But at the beginning of the week, it started freezing up on me and I could not figure out why. Sometimes it would happen after 5 minutes of work, other times 4 hours. Absolutely frustrating. And nothing I tried seemed to stop the cycle. So now I’ve reached the reformat level…unfortunately that task is more difficult on this laptop than I ever imagined possible. I’m giving it a couple more days and then I might just have to break down and buy a new one. It really wasn’t something I wanted to do right now…I already have to replace the sunglasses Ayla decided to eat Friday morning. This week has not been the best one. But at least Mackenzie is back on her regular sleep schedule so all hope for this world hasn’t been lost.
I did notice that, after going through 3 laptops. I finally got an Apple and haven’t looked back since! I wish i would have converted earlier.
I lost my laptop too….was a rush to get any files off while it was in its downward spiral. Using a desktop now, but lusting after one of those little notebooks.
@Michelle – I’m still so apprenhensive about Mac’s. They seem cool but what if the PC in me causes me to do something to melt down the Mac? And I’m not sure about all my software either because I do tons of programming work and things like that which I fear would not be compatible on the Mac…I definitely consider it a little bit more after each meltdown, though. I guess with the next meltdown I’ll do some further research about that.
@Janet – My husband has a little Acer netbook that he adores. Extremely compact and runs quite well…you just have to get used to typing on the world’s smallest keyboard π I ended up getting a new Samsung laptop. We had one before that lasted at least 2.5 years before it started to sound like it was coughing up a lung. It still works well, actually, just sounds very sickly which is when the Acer came along.
Yes – next time you are considering it, let’s have a chat! I program for work, but you can make any Mac windows-compatible (moreso than you used to be able to). You can even install a windows partition and/or emulator so that you can still do everything. That fact has always been my “safety” in case I can’t do something with the Mac version of windows software, but so far, I haven’t needed to. I’ve even got Microsoft Office and MSN on here. I won’t say there wasn’t a bit of a process to adopt the Mac way of doing things, but it’s paid off.
Oh, and it’s pretty hard to melt down a mac. π It’s made for people like me, formally known in the past as “The Electronics Wrecker”
I am SO an “Electronics Wrecker.” I try to touch electronics as little as possible to prevent somehow screwing them up. Thankfully that’s really the only thing I break but it an be very expensive lol.
We will definitely have to talk more about Macs. The whole never melting down issue is quite nice…and not being a victim to every virus on the block is also nice. I never realized you could partition them like that…and then you just install windows and everything in that partition? I’m sure it won’t be more than 2 years before I’m in this situation again…maybe even sooner when it comes to my desktops. It’s a crying shame how quickly this stuff breaks down…and I think windows has a lot to do with that too.
