While going through old magazines, I came across this idea which I LOVE: cut pieces of thin wood boards into small pieces, write the names of the herbs, fruits and veggies they will mark, decorate them with twigs or other things if you like (as they do with the rosemary sign here – click on the image to make it larger) and use little metal photo and card holders which you set into stones (or anything else heavy) to hold them in place. You could also just stick the metal posts directly into the pot with the plant.
I personally think that one could assemble all this for almost nothing. We have quite a few pieces of scrap wood which would be perfect for constructing the signs. Stefan assures me that the metal stands can be bought for next to nothing but someone really ingenious could certainly make them themselves and probably have some fun doing it – making the stands curvy or with designs in the posts. You could even make the stands out of sticks. And of course rocks can be had for free in many places if you take the time to start collecting them. It’s unfortunate we didn’t have this idea in our old house because there would have been tons of rocks for me to use!
