Our refrigerator is on the fritz. It’s not really been normal since we moved in January but now with it being above 90 on some days, it’s clear that the fridge is not performing like it should be. Overnight it gets down to the 60s and the fridge still doesn’t keep anything cold. In fact, I’m not sure that it’s cooling at all now. Lunch meat that I put in there on Friday which was fresh was spoiled as of yesterday, none of the drinks really seem to be cold in the bottles and it’s generally just not looking good. But did I mention that the freezer is functioning perfectly? Apparently the fridge has two separate compressors so at least that is some consolation…but it is time to investigate and get to the bottom of the problem.
Our first thought was just to call someone to come out but it’s not been very easy so far to find someone who services fridges…or maybe we aren’t looking in the right place. But then we realized that we may be able to fix it ourselves since it could just be something that has come loose or perhaps a vent that has frozen shut…I’m definitely hoping it will be something pretty simple so we’ll see. We don’t really want to have to buy a new refrigerator right now. Well we would actually love a new fridge but the one we want is over €3,000 and that’s just out of the question at this moment.
Anyway, I’m going to take advantage of the not yet boiling hot weather and see what I can discover. I’m generally a bit accident prone when it comes to all things electronic but I am going to be extra careful. This fridge is one of the first things Stefan and I bought when we got here in 2001. We needed a kitchen for our apartment because they generally don’t come with one built in and have lugged it from place to place with us over the last 6 years.
I think most fridges are having a hard time in this hot weather. We had a repair man come out and it turned out the coils hadn’t been cleaned since the last century! Are all fridges that expensive in Germany or is it a sub-zero or other type that you have on your wish list?
Melissa
Yeah I’m sure the heat hasn’t been helping it but on the other hand it gets down to the upper-50’s at night and it’s still about 63 inside the fridge which just isn’t normal. So we’re trying one more attempt ourselves to repair the fridge and then will call in the pros.
No, fridges aren’t always that expensive here although side-by-sides are definitely up the upper end of the price scale. They aren’t all that popular here yet so they charge an arm and a leg for them. The one we were looking at is a Liebherr side-by-side which is our dream fridge. It’s just short of commercial grade. You can read a bit more about it in our post here.
That fridge looks great! Too bad there isn’t a rep here in the USA. What a great idea, Hope you can find the $$ – wow!
Melissa
My mistake! They do have a USA rep here although the prices seem to be the same as they are in Euros.. I will keep it on my wish list too.
Thanks!
