After reading my post about us planning to put down wood tiles in the chicken coop, my mom recommended we think about doing an acid stain on the concrete instead. Just the name alone sounds intimidating but it would likely turn out to be a must more economical option so I’m doing some research.
Acid staining concrete is a process which has practically become mainstream lately. When we lived in Miami lots of people were starting to do it and it took after the trends of pressed concrete which was always very ingenious. But now people are working with concrete in ways that I never would have imagined.
This doesn’t really seem like an easy process and would require some skill and plenty of attention but I do think the average person could accomplish the task. Concrete-Stain.com even gives you a fairly thorough DIY guide. Or have a look at Gaye Goodman’s website and her DIY book (she’s also got some incredible photos of concrete floors that I can’t even believe are actually concrete).
I’m not certain this is something we will be giving a try soon and our chicken coop area is fairly small so we’ll probably still go with the wood, but it is an incredible concept that I think a few others could certainly benefit from…and had we not found our tile when we did, I would have considered it in our kitchen as an alternative.
