Wow. How is it already Thursday again? It’s been a whirlwind of a week. But I still made sure to take some pictures for You Capture, because it’s just so fun. And this week we had to themes, Silence and Halloween, so that made thing even more interesting. If you’d like to find out how you can participate or want to see more participants for this weeks challenge, head over to I Should Be Folding Laundry.

Halloween isn’t really celebrated here in Germany (which am usually grateful for) but we did have some kids all hopped up on sugar ring our doorbell anyway. We gave them some candy and sent them on their way because they at least had their faces painted. But to the kids that tried to get candy with no costumes, try putting at least SOME effort into it next year. Sheesh. We’re talking about free CANDY here — not dental floss!

About five minutes walk from our front door, there is a church (Presbyterian I want to say) that has a nice graveyard and has just beckoned us to photograph it. So when I heard this week theme was “silence”, I was quite excited.

This is part of the memorial on the front of the church for fallen soldiers of the first and second world wars. When you’re there in person, he almost looks real. We actually got to play with a new piece of equipment while taking this photo because we took photos once before and no light hits his face. So we got some of those cool pop-open reflectors and voila, we had sun on the face. Those things ROCK, by the way. Got a huge one at Photokina for 20 bucks… so lovely!

Here’s another shot of him with more photoshopping. What would I do without actions??

A plaque at the graveyard which is especially spooky thanks to the skull on the bottom. A nice touch, I have to say. Not a CLUE what it says on there though. Something about 1742 and God.

Behind the main cemetery is this fabulous little chapel and a private graveyard. You can’t go in there (I guess they had some vandalism problems) but you can peer over the wall. And this is part of what you’ll find…

Spooky, right? I think this sandstone cross is really pretty…and the part that is darker in the middle is actually bright green moss. Looks prettier in sepia though!

And another shot from the graveyard of a newer grave with a beautiful iron cross…which I’m fairly certain was built by our neighbor. He does amazing work! I really wanted the cobweb in the middle to show up more but I just couldn’t make it happen…

Hope you enjoyed them!
