We’re doing something a bit different for Easter this year. We usually visit Locarno, Switzerland, to get in some climbing. The weather is usually a bit warmer there than here in Germany and we can enjoy our first taste of the summer….but this year a pretty yucky weather front is heading into Europe and apparently it’s going to be rather miserable everywhere. They’re predicting a white Easter for much of Germany and even Locarno is expected to get a bit of snow.

The good news for the Defender is that it will get to see any snow that we have in Frankfurt…the bad news is that he won’t be coming along with us this year for Easter. We have been thinking about buying an RV for at least a year now and have decided to test one out for this vacation. We’ll see how we like it (although we can’t really imagine that we won’t enjoy ourselves) and will then have a better idea about the kind of layout we want, etc. We’re thinking an older RV will be good for us, possibly even one that needs some work (new seats, beds, cabinets, etc.). The most important issue will be making sure the engine is good and that there are no structural problems with the vehicle. Since we don’t really know anything about these sorts of things, we did buy ourselves an ebook from RVersCorner which gives a bunch of tips about what you should specifically be looking for and what sort of work would be involved to repair the issues you may find.

So the RV is booked and we would consider just going snowboarding for the holiday since there should be snow finally…but we can’t cancel our reservation without paying 80% of the fee – so we might as well go somewhere! We’d love to head south and find a nice, warm beach to relax on for the vacation…but it’s just a bit too far to drive. So we are currently thinking we will head back to Grado, Italy, and follow up with a trip to Punto Sabbioni the next day. From there we’ll take the ferry into Venice again and do a little city trolling…then back to Punto Sabbioni for a repeat of an incredible meal like we had the first time we were there (or so we’re hoping!) So far Italy hasn’t let us down when it comes to great food and beautiful scenery so we don’t expect to be let down this time either.

It’s supposed to be the beginning of the tourist season in Italy and most of the locals will have left the major cities for the invasion of tourists so the traffic could be a nightmare. But we’ll be leaving here on Thursday evening and will drive as many of the 700 km as possible then…and whatever is left the following morning. That’s one of the beauties of an RV, after all. We just hope we don’t have any weather complications since this will be our first RV driving experience…

Wish us luck!!
