A house can become a home in many ways. One of those ways is through renovation – but not every renovation project has to be a huge one. When you choose a style to match your lifestyle and tastes, you can transform your home, giving it warmth and character. Here are some ways to transform your house, room by room, into a gorgeous home that matches your personality.
Front Room
The front room sets the tone for the rest of your home and it is here you should begin. If it looks contemporary and you want to give it a Victorian feel, for example, begin with the flooring. Victorian style usually calls for wood floors. Next, choose your wall paint color or wallpaper. Gold, blue and earth tones were some popular paint colors for the time period. You can also easily find Victorian wallpaper at interior decorating stores. Furniture and light fixtures are next. Victorian furniture was distinctive and ornate. Furniture legs were carved wood and often curved gracefully down towards small “feet.” Light fixtures were likewise ornate. View the room as a whole and match walls, flooring and furniture to the design style you have chosen.
Dining Area
The primary piece of furniture will be the dining room table. This table will set the tone for the whole room, so choose it carefully. For example, if you are going for a Victorian look, the table should be wood with innately carved legs. If you prefer the shaker look, choose a simpler style of wood table. Alternatively, if your design tastes lean towards contemporary, a glass and metal table provides a clean, modern look.
Kitchen
Many people find the kitchen to be more difficult to decorate than other rooms. Modern appliances feel out of place when the rest of the house has an older style. But a few simple changes can help. Make use of wood and natural stone where you can –wood cabinets with a rustic finish and natural stone counter tops help give the kitchen a historic feel. Additional items such as hanging herbs, old cast-iron pans and antique teakettles add even more to the look. You can also cover many appliances like the dish washer and fridge with doors which match the rest of your cabinets so that they blend in better.

Bathroom
A beautiful bathroom makes getting ready for the day a more pleasant experience. Treat yourself to bathroom renovations, whether big or small. Large renovations could include installing a new, larger tub or shower. Bathtubs that add character and luxury include claw foot tubs and sunken tubs. Smaller renovations can mean something as simple as adding artwork, sculpture and hanging plants to the bathroom.
Other bathroom additions can include installing a new vanity to fit your home’s new style. You can look online at places such as PremiereVanities.com to decide which style and color match the look you wish to achieve.

Bedroom
Comfort should be paired with style for this room. The bed sets the tone. Choose a wood four-poster bed or a wood sleigh bed to match a historic décor style. The other furniture should be of the same material and style of the bed for congruence. Add rich draperies to lend a feeling of luxury.
All your choices should reflect your personal taste and style. With some planning, you can have the home of your dreams.

I agree about the furniture pulling the whole room together – but I must say the choice of rug int he first photo is very influential. These rooms all look amazing, too, because of the high ceilings – wish I had them!
We’re lucky to have high ceilings here at the new apartment — but I just feel like I lack a lot of design flair. I guess that’s what makes it so great to have sites like Pinterest and the internet in general for inspiration!
