After our last post we made our way back outside and worked on the watering system. We laid out all the pots we have and found an even better way to fit all 50 of them in the greenhouse without tripping over anything. We have also pretty much decided that we will hold off on building the benches until next year and just see how things go with the pots sitting on the floor.
Our first order of business was to lay hoses along each row of pots for the microdrip system. We went row by row, first measuring off the distance from pot to pot and cutting the small hose into sections. Then we stuck each little dripper into the hose and anchored the hose in place with little pegs which stick into the soil in the pot (for those that actually have something in them of course). Each pot now has one dripper each row of pots has it’s own set of drippers.
After all the piping was laid in the greenhouse Stefan dug a trench down the middle of the garden. Here we laid the larger main microdrip piping. Each row of drippers in the greenhouse and each set of sprinklers that will be set in the raised beds feed off this main hose. This allows us to maintain decent pressure throughout the system.
We ran out of split off pieces which connect the mini hoses to the big main hose. They are shaped something like this _|_. But once we have them all connected we will bury the hose again and eventually lay down bark and pine mulch over the top to form our paths.
This morning we went back to Sunflower garden center and picked up more soil, a few more things to hopefully complete the water system and new garden shears. We’re going to be heading outside shortly and will likely start with completing the potting of the rest of the plants. Then we’ll put the finishing touches on the watering system and hopefully be able to get that all hooked up and the water running. Otherwise we’ll have to spend time after work to get it finished before we go away on Thursday.
