I think I promised another update quite a while ago and although you did see a lot of the plants in the recent video, I think photos are able to show the progress much better. We moved the plants into the greenhouse May 17th or 18th. The only reason I can be sure that it was one of these days is because we had the reunion party here on the 19th and the plants were sitting on our kitchen table until we had the plastic up on the greenhouse frame which coincided with the party. I’ve not been doing such a stellar job on my garden journal now that they are in the greenhouse but I am at least keeping track to some extent with photos 🙂
When we moved everything into the greenhouse we thought for a little while that we might lose everything. Most of the plants experienced a hard adjustment going from the somewhat cool indoors to the very hot greenhouse. Thankfully we had a break from the really hot weather after their first week in there and we had rain for about a week. After that, things really started looking better. And now most of the plants are really flourishing.
First are the watermelon plants. We started them about a month ago and are not really sure how they will do overall. We would like to leave them in the greenhouse as long as possible but spacing could become an issue.
Next the eggplants. These have definitely doubled in size in the last two weeks. They are absolutely loving it in the greenhouse. We have six here and there is another in the seedling tray still that will need to be transplanted.
Here we have the stevia. We lost 3 of the 4 plants due to poor soil drainage. But it would seem that this 4th plant is actually two plants so we will try to separate them eventually also. This plant is also really thriving in the greenhouse and we are very much looking forward to it growing to a full plant. We have tons of friends now that want a cutting so we will be trying our hand at propagation with these when they are ready.
Next are the sweet potato plants. We need to transplant these soon as well but also are not really sure where they will be happiest. They have been doing very well so far in the greenhouse and generally like a warm climate so we’ll probably keep them in here. But finding the right containers to grow them in could be interesting.
Below are the Black Krim tomatoes. These are also doing very, very well in the greenhouse. They are just loving it. If you look really closely you might be able to see the blooms which have not yet opened but should be in the next few days.
Here are the pinto beans. These are just starting to bloom now. We need to build the trellis for them as well as for the cucumbers, zucchini and tomatoes…
And speaking of zucchini, here they are. I noticed this morning that several of the plants already have small zucchini on there already. I will try to remember to take a photo of them soon but they are about 2 inches long now!!
Here are the Colibri tomatoes. They are also still doing very well. We had a slower start with them so they are a bit smaller than some of the others but they are still doing very well.
These last three photos are of the plants we bought a few weeks ago at a nursery and never quite got around to post about. But we were very excited about the purchases and still are!
The first plant below is a Red Zebra tomato plant. The fruit is actually orange and red striped and you can see that we already have the first two tomatoes on there.
And this one is a Big Rainbow beefsteak tomato plant. The fruit from this plant are orange, yellow and red striped and weigh in at about 500 g. I really can’t wait for these to start growing.
And on the left you can see the bigger of two small peppers on our Turkish Sweet chili plant. And the little one on the right is a Thai Hot chili plant. These go well in combination with the 10 or so Cayenne plants we still have and will need to transplant eventually. We also have seeds for jalepeno and a few other chili peppers but it’s so late now that we figure we will probably wait and just see how these go. This is only our trial run after all for the garden and greenhouse.
