Well, the first of many trips to the home improvement store is behind us. We haven’t gotten nearly as far as we wanted to but still are on track. The bad news, we need a lot more ready mixed concrete than anticipated. We had figured about 10 bags would be enough but when we gave the guy at the counter the measurements of the foundation he calculated 35 bags of 25kg (about 55lbs) each – yikes. We drive a Land Rover Defender, but that is too much for our truck to handle. So, they will deliver it on Thursday. Hearing that we need 35 bags kind of scared us since all of the catalogs we have list the items, but altogether the 35 bags actually only cost about 90 Euros. On the drive home we actually figured out that we wouldn’t even need all 35 bags since only the boarder is 12″ deep and the middle of the foundation is much thinner. So perhaps we can cancel that order and actually pick the bags up ourselves. The defender should be able to handle about 20 bags at a time.
What we did get though is the boards we need for framing the foundation, a pretty nifty miter saw and a bunch of Gardena stuff for the flower beds. Most importantly there, the tubing which goes into the flower beds since we want to lay that before we do the gavel pathways and the boarding up of the beds.
In a little bit we’ll get to work on framing out the foundation and inspecting the situation regarding the raised beds. Then another trip to the lumber yard – wow this is turning out to be an expensive vacation.
