Well, the progress on the projects didn’t get as far as it could have today. Macky got the door framed out but unfortunately the place he ordered it from sold him the wrong sized door frame so he’ll be coming back again tomorrow. He did get the hole cut in the kitchen cabinets though which is a plus. Now that’s back as far against the wall as it will go and we’ll see what our Italian counter top friend has to say about it all when he comes to measure later this week (we hope). Macky also put the trim on the staircase as promised and will bring a bit of stain for it tomorrow so it should match the color on the stairs.
I didn’t ask him about the cabinet upstairs yet but perhaps he can tackle that tomorrow with any other small projects we might come up with that he hasn’t finished yet. He’s also supposed to start working on a bid for us to have the foundation walls around the front door repaired. There is some damage because the right materials weren’t used when it was done last time or perhaps it’s just been too long since it was done. Costmetically that is going to make a huge impact, especially once it’s painted along with most of the rest of the house and the shutters. Yes, still tons of work ahead of us but thank goodness the spring and summer are on their way!
We’ve come a long way when you look back to the old photos of the stairs. Wow. It’s crazy but sometimes it’s hard for me to imagine that it was just a few months ago when everything looked SO different here. It makes me extremely thankful that we’ve taken as many photos as we have thus far. It would have been nice if your video camera was working properly back then but it is now so maybe we’ll get some good footage of what we’ve done so far and what is to come.
We took down the lovely wagon wheel railing which hugely changed the feel of the entry way. Of course when the dog starts getting older or when we have kids, we’ll have to do something else there because the stairs will become a major hazard…but it works for us right now.
And of course we had the stairs sanded down to their natural color which turned out really nicely in the end. But we did leave the worn down steps and didn’t have them shifted just because they’re crooked. It’s an old house and we want to keep some of that old feel. If I was over 160 years old, I’m sure I would be crooked also. ๐
That stair rail WAS ugly–and I can’t get over the fact that I’m a stranger in Iowa commenting on the interior of your house in Germany. I wonder if the wheel was from that old cart that’s featured in some of the old photos. Glad you kept the stairs in their worn condition. Your house is looking beautiful.
The wonders of the Internet, right? ๐ We still have the railing in the barn because there was no room in our last trash container and the thing weighs a ton. We figured we might be able to sell it, especially since it matches one outside that will also be coming down soon. I’m pretty sure the wheels in there are new although we have about 10 or so of them in various sizes from small to huge around here. The PO was a collector of EVERYTHING and this place definitely reflected that when we bought it. But we loved it because it’s been our own little antique store lol
