I saw this extremely cool tutorial on how to build your own outdoor fire pit and I’m wondering where we could set one of these up without needing to move it…which of course would be impossible the way this thing is constructed. But I suppose it could work if it was built in the garden somewhere…which isn’t a terrible idea in my opinion…but of course our first focus for that area back there is just getting the weeds cleaned up! At our housewarming party last weekend, someone actually offered himself to us for weeding services if he would be paid in schweinebraten. Seems like a more than fair trade to me since it was Stefan’s mom that agreed to it and she would be making the delectable roast pork for us…

But back to the point. In their latest newsletter, This Old House had a very cool tutorial about building your own fire pit. They estimate about 2 days work and $500 for materials which is more pricey than most fire bowls you could buy but massively more sturdy and much nicer looking. They also consider the project to be “difficult” and not only will you have to do some heavy lifting and deep digging – but you’d also get to try your hand at stone chiseling.

I’m certainly tempted…but the more important question may be can we built a spit over it and roast a pig on it? 😉

By the way, if you haven’t been to ThisOldHouse.com lately, go check it out. They’ve revamped their website and it’s very nice. The flow of the tutorials is really great plus they give you a complete materials list, a tools list and a few accessories (which I now see actually DO include a fire spit…and a dome cover).
