For the last couple of weeks Ayla has not been her usual self when it comes to eating breakfast and dinner. When her meals were offered to her, she would just sort of pick at them and finally got the point that she wasn’t really eating much at all. The first few days that she was doing this, it was really hot outside so we assumed that might have something to do with it. She was just eating a portion of her breakfast but still consuming most of dinner so we weren’t too concerned. As of last week, she started eating even less which has had us more and more concerned.

Ayla loves eating and she would still take most treats offered to her and of course any human food offered to her but she was turning up her nose at the frosty paws which was a bit strange. But we’ve thought that she was about to go into heat for a while now so we thought perhaps that was part of our problem. Instead what seem to have discovered is that Ayla doesn’t like her puppy food anymore. I kinda spaced out last time I bought her dry kibble and picked up the puppy format again instead of her usual Black Angus, Barbarie Duck and herring mix…tragic I know. Her disinterest in eating can essentially be traced back to when I started feeding that to her again since she started ignoring it a week or so after she’d been eating it just fine.

This past weekend we were starting to really worry because she hadn’t really eaten in a few days so we made her a steak with dinner. She scarfed down the steak but left the rest of the puppy kibble in the bowl…go figure. Last night we had chicken quesadillas for dinner so I made a chicken breast for Ayla as well. I cut it up and mixed it in with her good kibble (no puppy stuff), a bit of canned food and a little water. A few minutes later, the bowl was licked completely clean. Apparently the puppy chow is just not working for her.

Unfortunately the lack of eating has made her system out of whack and she’s got the runs…so I guess I will be going with rice and chicken for the next few meals and hopefully get her evened out again. I am definitely excited that she is eating again though. I mean she’s always been a little bit finicky about her food and certainly usually prefers human food (who wouldn’t) but now I guess I have to watch out that she doesn’t get any crazy ideas and start insisting that I cook for her all the time… πŸ˜‰
