My last post about the seeds was April 11th. Not good, I know. We’ve made a MASSIVE amount of progress since then, I am very happy to report. We did have a few casualties from Hurricane Ayla and I think we may not have see the last of her, but hopefully the plants will be moving to a safer home in the greenhouse very soon and we won’t have to worry so much. She prefers to disturb the bigger seedlings and leaves the covered mini-greenhouses alone which is at least some consolation.
I guess the best way to do this is just to give a brief run down plant by plant of what we’ve done since then. I’ve been keeping up with my gardening journal very well so I know exactly what’s gone on. π
Vegetables
Beans – We planted pinto beans on the 14th. We just took 10 seeds out of a pack of dried beans and gave it a try. We have 2 sprouted now and about 5-6 inches tall and 2 more seem to be starting to peak out of the ground. We’re not really sure how many plants we’ll need to be able to eat refried beans once a week so this will be an interesting test year for these.
Corn – We’ve currently got 4 Jala jumbo corn stalks started with 4-5 leaves. One got molested by the dog but it should pull through. The sweet corn is also doing well. We’ve got 4 of those also at about 6-8 inches tall with 3-4 leaves.
Cucumbers – Five of the canning cucumbers have sprung up and are 4-7 inches tall now. The Gynial salad cucumbers are down to only 3 now and have their 4th leaves coming up.
Eggplant – These seeds sprang up fairly fast and in 17 days we’ve got 6 plants growing at heights of about 1-3 inches.
Peanuts – These are one of the most interesting plants for us to watch grow since we aren’t sure how they’re going to develop. So far they seem to be thriving and are about 6-8 inches tall now with 4-5 branches of leaves.
Tomatoes – So far we have 6 Black Krim plants growing. One recently sprang up and 5 plants are now about 3-4 inches tall. The Colibri tomatoes are also doing very well. We now have 9 plants ranging from 2-5 inches tall.
Zucchini – The Defender zucchini are also doing quite well. We have 4 plants now, 6-8 inches with the 3-4 leaves.
Chilies
Cayenne – At the moment we still only have Cayenne growing but we just ordered a few more seeds from Exoga so we will be starting another 3 kinds in the coming weeks. At the moment 18 seeds have sprouted, one within the last day or so. The other seventeen 11 day old plants are about 1-2 inches tall now.
We have quite a few plants that have started in the same soil starter pods because we planted several seeds in each at once. The chilies and tomatoes especially need to be separated out. Since we couldn’t find any cheap pots for the greenhouse locally, we ordered some from eBay. Hopefully they will arrive later this week so we can start that process.
And we need to plant quite a few of the seeds we bought yesterday so it will be another full week of growing. π
I’m interested to see how the peanuts turn out. I’d love to grow them π
