I have come to believe that I function infinitely better when I have music playing, regardless of what I’m doing. Sometimes I will just turn on the radio and listen to whatever comes on…but since the radio stations here are increasingly lame and geared only towards teenies, I try to avoid that as often as possible. I do sometimes listen to the Armed Forces Network (AFN) which is broadcast from some of the military bases here, but they are nearly as lame as the German stations…and if I hear Coldplay one more time, I may have to cut my ears off. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the obsession with that band is (although I almost like their song with Kanye – who I also never thought I could like but have recently been brainwashed into believing I think is cool) but that’s a topic for a different day.
I prefer Internet radio most of the time…I don’t have to worry about changing the dial and can listen to country music all the time which really makes things seems to flow for me. I am a Texas girl at heart, after all. But seriously – cooking, cleaning, programming websites…it all works with country. None of that old stuff, though – I want the modern country with people like Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn. People that write lyrics that I can understand, relate to and that often tug at my heart strings. For fear of sounding about 100 years old, I’m not really sure I always know what some of these rappers are saying or most heavy metal “singers” either. Thank goodness for the Internet where we can find lyrics to everything. I honestly find myself liking a song much, much more if I can sing along with it…which I guess comes from many years of choir in school & church. But it just makes sense to me that what I am feeding into my brain is not about mutilating puppies or mass suicide, ya know?
But make no mistake…I am not an iPod junkie. My husband has two (no, i’m not kidding – one of those tiny ones that you just know you’re going to loose in your pocket and the massive 180GB one) and he adores it. I listen to it occassionally in my car while driving, but honestly I just don’t care. He’s got 1000’s of songs on there, with no playlists made up, and I honestly just want to push a button and let stuff play. But instead I have to push a button every few minutes to jump to something new which, when I’m driving, I just don’t need to be focusing on. If one person can DJ, that’s one thing…but I lost that priviledge recently so it’s all him again. Boys and buttons! I actually am very thankful that we’re having a girl – at least we won’t need double as many electronics around here.
At the moment I am tuned into my Yahoo Launchcast. I really like that I can listen to it while I work within my messenger…and I can rate stuff right there too, since I am a rating addict. They have all the preset stations plus the one you build yourself with your ratings…quite nifty. I hear some crazy stuff from their suggestions but on the other hand, they sometimes throw something out that I love but would never hear otherwise…always fun times.
