So we didn’t exactly get to finish the compost bin or work on the greenhouse this weekend. We managed to get ourselves out of bed at about 7:30 on Saturday but after fully waking up, taking the dog and cleaning up, it was almost time for our guests to arrive. That didn’t give Stefan time to cut the supports for the compost bin and we can’t use loud things like the table saw on Sunday, so we decided to get our plants started for the garden. This will give us a little extra motivation to get everything finished.
We’ve started 18 various plants, everything from chilies to tomatoes. This is just our preliminary planting. I have to fold about a million more pots in the next week or so. Then we’ll do another round. We’re hoping to stagger the production of the plants this way and extend our harvesting time. The greenhouse and tunnels should help with that as well so we can get things in the ground sooner.
I’m always pretty giddy during planting. The anticipation of all the yummy things we’re going to be able to eat just makes my mouth water. I could sit and flip through canning cookbooks for hours, just dreaming about all the things that will be in our pantry soon.
We have two pots of seeds for every plant we’ve started with a few seeds in each. We’ll thin down and separate as they get bigger. Here’s what we planted today; most of them are from Burpee.
- Pickling cucumbers (these are German)
- Roma Tomatoes
- Black Krim Tomatoes
- Brandywine Tomatoes
- Carnival Mix Bell Peppers (a colored mix with yellow, purple and other cool colors)
- Chinese Giant Bell Peppers
- Adria Eggplant (we grew these two years ago and they were great – easy to grow, lots of fruit and SO tasty)
- Black Beauty Eggplant
- Luffa
- Sugar Baby Watermelon
- Sugar Belle Watermelon
- Hale’s Jumbo Melon
- Spaghetti Squash
- Small Sugar Pumpkin
- Habanero Pepper
- Jalepeno Pepper
- Dynamite Kopfsalat (head lettuce)
While we were working, we sampled a bit of our homemade apple wine. It’s turning our really well. Looks like we won’t be buying bottled ever again…and our friends should look forward to drinking lots of it at our parties in the future. 😉
Would you be willing to share or direct me how to find your recipe for homemade apple wine? It sounds wonderful!
Hi Tiffany! I love your folded newspaper pots! That never occurred to me, being the suburban child raised on prepared foods and the smallest garden ever (my mom only planted two bell pepper plants and tomatoes). I’m interested in starting a garden this year, so I better get on it. We inherited a compost bin, but haven’t been caring for it. The greenhouse? might be troublesome; I have nothing of the sort. Is there a pattern for your pots available? I’m sure I could make something up, but I’d love to have a link to start with. I’m excited to have found your blog!
