There have been a lot of posts on our upstairs bathroom lately, and yes it is the biggest project currently going on at the farm, but I figure it’s time to post a little something about another future project . The wine cellar. The farm has an old cellar with a vaulted ceiling built from natural rock. The walls are very thick and the climate down there is just absolutely perfect for storing wine. Currently there is a bunch of junk down ther including a concrete mixer and many many buckets of paint, but soon we hope to make a little tasting corner and many shelves for our modest (but growing) selection of wine. While there are many companies out there offering wine racks of varying quality we have decided that we would go the DIY route with this one. Poured concrete racks made exactly to our own specifications and wooden benches built into the far end of the cellar. As I am typing this we had the idea that we could use the old piece of marble we found in the cellar as a top for the table, but I guess we should think about that some more given the danger of spilling red wine on marble.
The plan is as follows: In two weeks the “Schadstoff Mobil” (literally translated Pollutant Vehicle) is coming around to collect old stains and lacquers and we will use that opportunity to start clearing out the cellar. Eventually we will put pavers on the ground and way down the road it will be time to do the build out. It really isn’t much of a priority, but boy will it be exciting when it’s finished.
Mmmm. Wine cellar. You should head over to the Pigeon Point Project on houseblogs and check out the wine cellar that they built. Very pretty. And welcome to houseblogs! I love the area of Germany you live in, have been there more than once.
Thanks for the heads up. I glanced at their page and like the shelves they’ve built but I think we’re planning for a bit more than 300 bottles. We’ve hardly even started and we’re hovering around 100 and I know we have space for MUCH more lol.
