Berlin is an awesome place, literally 50 yards from where semi awesome have been rock stars (like the Pet Shop Boys) performed last night for the big new year’s celebration the 42. Berlin Neujahrslauf took place this morning. Well, not really morning per se, rather a leisurly noon, which was quite appreciated given last night’s festivities. This annual tradition is not really a race as such, but rather a leisurely stroll down the middle of one of Berlin’s most prominent roads.

Unfortunately it was drizzling just a bit when runners lined up right behind the Brandenburg Gate. Promptly at noon the run set off along Unter den Linden street up towards Alex, the famous TV tower of East Germany times. The run itself was only 4km and going at a snail’s pace (7.19min/km) but the mood was great with everyone remembering runs from the last season or already looking forward to the new season.

While the distance is short and hardly even worth tying sneakers up for, the run was a lot of fun to do – and since there was no starting fee it was good clean fun on New Year’s Day to get the juices pumping just a bit. The organizers do ask for a donation to a local children’s hospice, a very worthwhile cause.
