If you’re like most moms, you spend a great deal of your time in the kitchen. If you’ve been in your home for a while, chances are your kitchen is a bit dated. After years of mopping, chopping, and rearranging things, everything from your countertops to your vinyl tiles are likely worn out from old age. The good news is that no matter what your budget is, you can give your kitchen a “makeover” that will inspire you. What’s even better is that many renovations completed in the kitchen can also increase the overall value of your property.
You see, the kitchen is generally referred to as the heart of the home. It is where meals are prepared and families gather (whether for a quick snack, eating breakfast, etc.). Since many people utilize their kitchens to the fullest, it is one of the first rooms that homebuyers will consider before making an offer. HGTV points out that the right kitchen renovations could yield you 100% return on your investment if not more (depending on the area in which you live).
Even if you don’t intend to sell your property any time soon, you can still reap the benefits of having a new and improved kitchen to cook in. We’ve been thinking about remodeling our own kitchen in the not-too-distant-future, along with a few other condo renovations. And there are definitely a few things you want to keep in mind if you embark on such an adventure!
Below, are just a few ideas on how to remodel your kitchen and get more bang for your buck:
- Install New Cabinets – Over time, cabinets go through wear and tear. They are constantly opened and closed to retrieve necessary food items, and the shelving can also begin to give after holding the weight of these food items daily. Fixtures such as the knobs begin to come loose, the finish begins to fade, and the shelves begin to sag or fall down altogether. To avoid this, you can consider investing in new kitchen cabinets. DeWils, a dealer of the kitchen cabinets San Francisco has to offer, has an actual planning center where you can decide which cabinets would best suit your needs and budget. Look in your local area to see if there is a similar place where you can research the latest kitchen trends and get inspired.
- Install New Fixtures – A simplistic option for upgrading your kitchen would be to install new fixtures. Installing upgraded handles on cabinet doors and even new and improved faucets for your kitchen sink can do wonders for the overall look and feel of the space. Fixtures can be as simplistic or extravagant as your personal tastes and budgets allow.
- Upgrade the Kitchen Flooring – If you still have vinyl tiles on your kitchen floors, it is probably time that you consider an upgrade. Vinyl flooring over time begins to look dingy (even when it’s clean). The tiles can begin to peel, and it makes the kitchen look a lot older than it actually is. Investing in flooring for the kitchen does not have to be expensive. Something as affordable as laminate tiles can do the trick and give the kitchen a fresh, clean, modern appeal.
- Install More Lighting – Unless you have several windows in your kitchen area, you probably don’t get much light from the sun. While you may already have a central light for everyday use, adding a few more lighting details can be a unique addition to the kitchen. Some add lighting features underneath their cabinets to illuminate the countertops which can also be a big plus when prepping food and cooking. Installing strategic lighting throughout the kitchen helps to focus on the positive attributes and also allows the cook of the house to see what they’re doing.
- Install New Countertops – Last but not least, if you have the funds to spring for new kitchen countertops, this is a significant investment to consider. You don’t have to go all out and install granite or marble countertops (unless you have the financial means to), but simply installing choices like laminate or tile countertops can be just as effective in improving the overall quality of your kitchen.
So as you can see there are several things that you can do to make your kitchen look and feel better. Whether you opt for a full overhaul, or you go for a more refurbished option, upgrading your kitchen is a great way to increase the overall value of your property. Once you’ve completed your new kitchen designs you can get back to preparing the ultimate meals for your family. Whether it’s a quick and easy leftover meal, or a cultural cuisine for your family to indulge in, you’ll find cooking is a lot simpler in a kitchen that inspires you.
Nice Tips
Absolutely right Tiffany, home renovation makes your home beautiful as well as increase property value. Kitchen renovation is big and time consuming project. Here you consider some important tips for kitchen remold which is very helpful.
It’s worth investing into updating and remodeling a kitchen. Like the title of this article said, it can increase the value your home and it can make it look more appealing to potential buyers if your looking to sell. It’s cool to live in a time where these kind of things can be done.
I have been hoping to sell my home, but I think it would be good for me to do a few renovations first, just to be sure that it can sell for a good price. These are all really great suggestions, and I especially like your idea to install new fixtures and get new flooring. I am one of those that still has vinyl flooring, so it would probably be good for me to look into nice tile or hardwood flooring. That way, it would look more modern and not so dated. I am sure that just starting with this will really help make my kitchen look nicer!
There are many reasonable priced flooring alternatives now, and they are often easier to clean and maintain than older flooring currently installed! Best of luck with your renovations!!
I’ve been thinking about changing up the way my kitchen looks. Right now, it has outdated appliances and the cabinets are a bit old and creaky. I would have to agree with all of the things that you listed above. Even doing one of them would add value to your home. It is also important that you get the help of a professional when doing things like this. Some of us might be able to do it ourselves, but not everyone can.
My wife and I are working on increasing the property value of our home right now, and we’re glad that we came across this blog. We liked the suggestion to install more lighting, which we hadn’t really thought of before, yet lighting does have a way of improving people’s perception of the value of something. Thanks for sharing, as this seems like a good investment for us!
I remember when my parents remodeled their kitchen, it looked total different. I like the tip about adding more lights, it seems that a brighter kitchen makes it look bigger and you can see much better. I think it will be fun to design my future kitchen after reading this.
Wow!!!!!!!!!! wonderful ideas. These all ideas can make the kitchen look newer. You can also try some other things like if your cabinets are not in so much bad condition, instead of changing you can paint them. You should always consider calling professional renovation companies for the renovation of your kitchen as they have new ideas on how to renovate, have experience and knowledge and will work within your budget.
I had no idea that installing new cabinets could increase the value of your home! My fiance and I have been thinking about renovating our kitchen, and changing the old cabinets is one of the top items on our to do list. Like you said, after many years of use cabinets start to sag and the finish starts to fade, which doesn’t look good! I think that just by updating or changing your kitchen cabinets you can change the entire feel of your kitchen. Great post, thanks for the tips!
Lighting is always a favorite of mine when it comes to remodeling. This is a smaller cost repair that can do wonders for the new finished look. It will substantially increase the value if done properly.
This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that installing more lighting in the kitchen can increase your home’s value. I’ve been wanting to do some updates on my kitchen for a while now, but I want to make sure what I do is worth the cost. I’ll definitely look into starting with new lighting so I can improve my house’s value. Thanks for the great post!
I really want to make sure that my home has the best possible value it can when I sell it. I had no idea that cabinets could add to value. Looks like it’s time to get new cabinets. Thanks for the advice!
I don’t think I have ever thought about installing more lighting to help make the kitchen pop with the remodel. This might be something that I will have to try or look into at least. I could see where we need more lighting.
I think that installing new cabinets is a great idea for a home renovation. You mentioned how they start to wear down after years of use, so some new ones could make a big difference in the kitchen. The cabinets in my house have had a very unpleasant smell in them ever since I moved in. I can’t wait to have them removed and replaced with something brand new.
Excellent advice. One of the harder areas of a remodel is visioning what the end result will be beforehand.
Great post-Tiffany! Thank you for teaching me how to increase my property value. I am looking into selling my home so knowing how to get the most out of it really helps. I like how you explained installing new cabinets can really increase property value since they go through a lot of wear and tear over time. I have never sold a home before, but I know how big of a difference a nice looking kitchen can make when it comes to pricing. Hopefully replacing my cabinets can really help increase the value of my home.s
I love the pictures you gave for examples. The tips are amazing as well. Using both, I can’t wait to make my new kitchen beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
I really like the idea of installing countertop to increase the property value. I would love to update our kitchen and make it look much more modern. Hopefully a quartz countertop will make it look a lot cleaner and update it a lot.
They are all amazing kitchen renovation ideas. I am keeping down my notes with me for personal reference.
I think the best things to update in the kitchen, if you are on a tight budget are the floor and the cabinet fixtures. New fixtures are easy to install yourself, and you can add fresh paint to the cabinets to make them look newer. Depending on the type for floor you want to install, it is also something you can easily do yourself. There are tons of tutorials online for laying tile and wood floors. Just remember that whatever you do it will make a mess, so have a place to put the trash, a roll of dumpster or equivalent, and be prepared to not have access to your kitchen for a couple of days while you work.
As much as I want to renovate my kitchen to make it fit my style, I really need to do it to increase the value of my home. Once I have money I will start with two of your ideas, new cabinets and countertops. I would love new flooring, but I think we would have to do more than just the kitchen due to the layout of the house. Thanks for these ideas!
I had no idea that more lights in the kitchen could help increase property value. I suppose it makes the kitchen look more bright and welcoming. I’ve been thinking about a remodeling and I think I might add this to the list of things to add. Thanks for the great advice!
Thanks for the article! I thought it was interesting that you suggest installing more lighting. Having enough light to see details and be comfortable in the kitchen can be crucial when it comes to selling the home later on. I want to remodel my kitchen but I can’t do it all by myself, I will probably end up hiring a professional to build my dream kitchen. If only I had enough money for that too. I really appreciate what you said in this article. I think you really know your stuff when it comes to kitchen remodeling.
I love the pictures you gave for examples. The tips are amazing as well.
My wife and I are renovating our kitchen this summer. I like that you mentioned new cabinets. We did that last year and it has made a huge difference. We are more organized and they look great. This summer we are redoing the floor and putting in marble counter tops.

Thanks for the helpful info.
I love the idea to install more lighting. I’m a cook myself and the poor lighting in my kitchen drives me crazy. I’ve had to use desk lamps to get more light on occasion, so I will definitely be installing more lighting as soon as possible.
I love the idea of installing new cabinets in the kitchen. I live in an older home that has tiny cabinets from 90 years ago that simply don’t do the job. I installed new cabinets last year that are a more appropriate size and it makes the kitchen so much more organized and undoubtedly raises my home value. Great suggestions!
It’s amazing how little things can add real value to your home. I never would have guessed that that adding new light fixtures, or just adding more lighting, could really make a difference. For a long time now, I’ve wanted to upgrade my kitchen, and I’m thinking that lighting would be a great place to start!
I agree, even the smallest or simplest renovation can do or can add a value to your home. It does not need to be big stuff. Focus on the small things first and the easy one. It’ll save you time and money.

I really like your tip about installing new cabinets since they go through so much wear and tear over time and the shelves can begin to sag. That seems to be the case with our cabinets since they are over 15 years old. Our home is fairly old and we have wanted to upgrade a few things to make it more modern so maybe changing some things in the kitchen would be really helpful and add to our property value. Thanks for the great tips!
This year, my husband and I made it a goal to completely renovate our kitchen and give it a more modern feel. I had no idea that installing more lighting in a kitchen could potentially increase the value of our home, but I can definitely see how natural window lighting would help illuminate the other good features of the space. It seems like adding new features will be both functional and visually appealing. Thank you for the helpful information!
