Some days it’s hard for us to believe that we have been in our condo for nearly nine months. At this point, we are just aching to make it a bit more “us.” Since we bought the place furnished, there is a lot of furniture here that isn’t exactly our style. But we’re making it work. And a few weeks ago, we started our take over mission of the master suite.

I couldn’t manage to track down a photo from before we moved in, but we’ve only added a bit of deco like the wall fan. The butterflies were already there…

A tolerable color and a decent sized room, but just a bit boring with the color over time. We were ready to do something bold and perhaps even a little bit crazy. So we bought some deep blue paint, taped things off and put the kid to work.

Well, she only helped out a little bit until the brush got heavy but we had hardly any mishaps. It was a surprisingly easy paint job. And here’s the finished product!

We love the color and it really brings out a lot of the blue in the fan. We used copper lanterns with LED candles inside. Now the candles come on every evening and turn themselves off before we head to bed. We love how they look like we have candles going but there’s no risk of burning the place down!

You may have also seen our recent Asian-style privacy window makeover. That helped brighten up the room a bit more and eventually we plan to change out the blinds in here with Asian-style paper window frames.

One of the new awesome tools we discovered while doing this project were these edger tools. While the corner one is pretty cool, the edger to trim around doors and ceilings is just awesome. It’s one of the best tools for painting that we’ve ever seen…and we have painted a surprising number of rooms in our days. Forgive me if this is all old news but in Germany, good gadgets are hard to find. And when you do, they seem to cost a small fortune. I love the fact that there are disposable pads which you can use, offering quick cleanup. master-suite-makeover-05

TIP: If you’re going to do some painting at home, don’t forget the rubber gloves! It keeps things so much cleaner and prevents the spread of paint when you need to leave your painting space.

So, this is our toilet corner before we painted…

And our big garden tub and shower area. One day we’d love to redo the tile there. But before that, we’ll tackle the cabinets and counters. master-suite-makeover-04

And oh the lamps. Don’t even know what to do with those bad boys but we have been changing them out with LEDs at least.

We taped off a lot of stuff in the bathroom which was before we had full trust in the edger tools. I do think it’s probably still worth it to do some taping in tricky areas like baseboards or near the mirror.

There were some interesting painting corners in this one. Getting around the toilet wasn’t easy so I called in the heavy artillery. I swear I was only photographing for a moment and then went right back to making sure no one fell off the ladder after I took this.

Mackenzie loves the ladder. Oh so much.

The bathroom was the same beige color that was in the bedroom (and the rest of the condo) and we selected a light blue color that compliments dark blue from the bedroom. The original plan was to paint one wall in the bathroom.

Then we went for two.

Eventually, we settled on painting all but one of the walls light blue. The last wall we decided to paint the same dark blue as the master bedroom. When you walk toward the bathroom from the master bedroom, you can see that dark wall. It flows with the dark wall in the bedroom and we will carry out the Asian feeling in here with some sort of accessories (yet to be discovered). Then we installed a piece of white trim to round out the transitions. master-suite-makeover-11

We’re really thrilled with the finished product and can’t wait to make some of our other ideas reality. We’ve got a LONG list of ideas in store for our home that will make this space completely ours. So stay tuned and know that we may be taking things slow, but we are definitely doing some fun things here. We have already flipped around the layout in the main living space which I hope to tell you about soon!

Do you have any home remodeling projects on your to do list this summer? Are you amazed by the impact a bit of paint can have like me? 🙂
