Traveling abroad is an amazing experience. As it taking a 4-week summer vacation to explore a corner of the world you’ve never been before. But if you go abroad for a longer time and you’re in a business where you need to be contacted and to call people frequently, you clearly need a cheap way to call your partners and clients.

Talking to someone is much more efficient and personal than just sending an email. When calling a friend you can really express what you just experienced in your travels and when calling a business partner you can really get stuff done.

We all know that you can easily talk to someone using different computer programs, with headphones and a microphone, but for that you need a computer. So what happens if you do not have your computer with you and you need to call someone on a cell phone or landline?

Luckily, more and more services are now available on the smartphone, too. For that, you need a VoIP service, which will allow you to stay connected with your business partners or your family wherever you are. Such apps act exactly like a regular phone call, but you do not pay the enormous fees of the phone operators. Most of these services offer you the possibility to configure your contacts, save new names and phone numbers and you can access your contacts and your records anywhere.

What is VoIP?

IP telephony is a technology that has already begun to change the way of communication between people. It was first used in 1973, when this technology was invented by ARPANET. Currently, most programs that include voice services are based on this technology, allowing you to make very cheap calls.

By VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), a group of resources are utilized that makes it possible to make calls over the Internet between two or more systems based on IP address (which we all know is unique to an individual connection). One of its main benefits is decreasing classic telephony costs. Thus, it makes it possible to have a telephone conversation between two correspondents, when at least one of them has an Internet connection (dedicated or temporary). As this technology uses the global Internet network, it does not use the conventional cellular technology, as in traditional phone calls, making the call cost much lower.

What do you need for VoIP?

  • A smartphone
  • A VoIP app
  • An internet connection

How does this technology work?

The person who initiates the call can be in any place of the world and can call anywhere in the world, as long as the originating device is connected to the Internet. The caller uses a computer or a telephone connected to a device for converting voice / IP and the called party answers a regular phone.  VoIP devices make possible the conversion of voice into IP packs. They can connect to the Internet and make phone calls, even international, without using a computer. The price of an Internet call is several times lower than the price of traditional calls. At the two ends of a VoIP connection we can have computers, mobile phones, VoIP hardware devices or faxes, in any combination.

These being taken into consideration, we can safely conclude that VoIP services are the best and the cheapest way of making calls, especially when travelling abroad. Moreover, some calling cards you can purchase nowadays (like EnjoyPrepaid) allow you to call back home even when you don’t have Internet access by using a normal landline, an access number and you own unique PIN. All for the same rate. Isn’t that twice as cool?

Have you ever used a VoIP service? What have your experiences been like?
