Newspapers litter the floor and tables, and my fingers are black. It must be getting close to potting time.

Yes, I am at it again, folding newspaper pots like a demon. I can do about 20 at one sitting before I go completely insane with the origami monotony. But since Stefan is home sick from work, we’re taking advantage of the time to get ourselves ready for the gardening season.

We screwed up last year by planting tons of seeds and then going on vacation for two weeks to Florida. The vacation was fantastic, don’t get us wrong. But most of our seedlings died while we were gone and when we got back, all our inspiration was dead with them. Plus we had just found out that Mackenzie was going to be joining us so that held us back as well.

But 2009 is the year for our garden to finally get established and growing lots of tasty things for us to eat. We already have all the seeds we need for everything we want to try (but is there such a thing as too many seeds?) and hope to be starting them in the next couple weeks. Then we just need to have some decent weather here and for Stefan to get well so we can get out in the garden and start getting our raised beds ready for planting.

It’s a daunting task. Things are not looking great out there but at least most things have died back for the winter. We just need to get a burn permit to get rid of all the tree cuttings and things that are piled up in the corner now. And at some point attack the ivy that is trying to eat our barn.

Ok, I’m scaring myself. Baby steps. One bed at a time…
