Adding a Glass Extension to a house comes with a hard task of maintaining a stable temperature within that house. Unlike solid walls, glasses are poor heat conductors. A temperature drop outside the house immediately causes a temperature drop inside the house and you need to guard yourself against such adverse heat loss. Low temperature may bring cold-related illness such as Pneumonia.
Fit a solid ceiling board
Because a glass extension cannot insulate your house, consider having a solid ceiling that absorbs much heat. Despite the heat that gets lost through the glass extension being great, the solid ceiling should be able to keep the room a little warmer for longer. The material used to make the ceiling should be thick with many air pockets. During the day, when there’s sunshine, the thick ceiling board will absorb heat. At night, when the temperature drops, the warm ceiling will insulate the room.
Use the right material on the floor
Using wood on the floor helps in reducing the noise that comes through a glass extension. However, wood is a poor heat conductor. A lot of heat will be lost within a short period causing the room to freeze.
Therefore, use a heavy material such as rocks in your floor. Rocks absorb more heat than wood and can keep the heat for long hours. During the day, the rocks within the floor will absorb heat and keep it warm during the night.
Put a fluffy Carpet on the floor. Apart from using the right material in making the floor, putting a carpet on it helps in heat insulation. A fluffy carpet has many air pockets, which are good insulators of heat. A carpet will absorb heat from the sun, which shines through a glass extension, and insulate the floor against heat loss. A drop in temperature outside the house will not affect the room instantly.
Use an air conditioner
Using an air conditioner to maintain a warm temperature in the house is straightforward. Set the air conditioner to produce sufficient heat to keep the room warm if other heat insulation methods fail. The best place to put an air conditioner is under the floor. By having an air conditioner under the floor, there will be a uniform distribution of heat in the room. An air conditioner put in a wrong place will cause one side of the room to be too hot while another side is barely warm.
Use the right furniture
In the room where a glass extension is installed, put furniture that absorbs heat. The furniture in that room should be covered in cloth. If possible, put cotton inside chairs to create many air pockets. In addition, let the furniture have dark colors. Dark colors absorb more heat compared to brighter colors. The blinds used on the glass extension should be light to allow more heat to reach inside the room.
Keeping a room with a glass extension is much easier than you may think. Apply simple techniques during winter to avoid freezing in your own house. You will enjoy watching beautiful scenery through a glass extension from a warm couch.
WOW – I love your glass extension! It’s so light and airy – Perfect for a Florida home. I would love to do this but with the threat of hurricane activity on the Gulf Coast/Pinellas County – I would be afraid. Also it’s not unusual to have tree limbs either from my trees or my neighbors in my back yard! During Irma, we evacuated to Charleston, SC to stay with my nephew. When I got back, my back yard looked like a lumber yard!
Does your county considered this an “enclosed porch or an added room for tax purposes? Just curious.
Thanks for sharing the beauty!
