Life,” my friend was saying. “Do you know what the hardest part is? It’s life. The hardest part of living is simply being alive.”

The expression on his face said he wasn’t kidding. And I didn’t doubt for a minute that he was telling the truth.

Life is difficult. Everything can change in a flash. And life can also be over in an instant. So why not make the most of it?

Do you find yourself waking up in the morning, dreading going to work? Do you find yourself living for the weekend, counting the minutes until Friday evening arrives…then staying up late every Sunday night just to make the weekend feel a bit longer.

It’s time to stop holding yourself back and start doing exactly what you want to do – when you want to do it.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about making a change in your life. Perhaps you want to move somewhere new. Or ask for a raise. Or perhaps you’re thinking about doing something more drastic, as we recently have. Like going out on your own to start a new business or becoming an independent contractor. There are so many opportunities out there. And in America, it couldn’t be easier to start out on your own.

One nice thing is that you can get your feet wet in a new profession or obtain the training you need in your off hours. And you might even be able to start moonlighting in your new profession before you quit the old job.

So why not partake in an endeavor that increases your income, has the flexibly associated with determining your own work schedule, and can literally improve your quality of life?

What will you do?

Starting your own business can be stressful and you should always do so with good planning and a lot of thought. Ask a mentor for advice on your business plan and the ideas you have, especially if you know someone in a similar profession. Figure out what your costs of doing business will be and what you need to get going.

There are a lot of paths you might want to follow, such as becoming a Realtor or specializing in massage therapy. And depending on the field, you’ll have different start up requirements, from obtaining the necessary certifications and licenses, acquiring specialty equipment like massage chairs, and finding a place to open up your business. These steps might sound like a work, but this is the foundation you need to get going. It takes extra work to ensure you have a life worth living, a life of your choice. So start with your new career and why not make it a career that benefits others’ lives and health as well as your own?

If you’re considering a career in the health field, the good news is that there are many paying jobs which are here for the long run. Better yet, becoming an independent contractor creates flexibility in your pay and hours, which can be customized to your lifestyle needs. So when you need to run to the doctor or your child is sick, you can do what needs to be done.

Massage therapists, hair stylists, personal assistants, errand runners for the elderly and others all have the freedom to make their own schedule and even charge what they want (within reason according to the local market).

If you feel like your life is in a rut, why not give a career change a thought? It’s your life, and you only get one. Stop making it “difficult” and start making it “yours”!
